Question:
very personal embarrising question

This is quite embarrissing. Yesterday I was walking on treadmill and felt like I needed to wipe my butt because I felt something wet. I went to restroom and there was bright red blood. I did not have a bowel movement since early that am. I contacted nurse and she said to just watch it and monitor my bp as I have no history of hemorrhoids. It has not happened since. Has this happened to anyone else?    — bikermama (posted on June 6, 2008)

Hi Arden, Usually bright red blood (which means fresh)is from the lower portion of the GI tract. If it continues, you should go to see your MD. Good luck to you! Ana Villa, RN

Yes, this happened to me too. I awoke one morning and there was large pool bright red blood in my bed. I called my primary physician and he contacted a GI specialist who hospitalized me, did blood work and a colonoscopy. I had internal hemorroids and a couple of polyps which were removed. I would suggest you call your primary care physician. Jane

I had lap band surgery on 4/14 and my two periods since have been very heavy, also have had some spotting and cramping between periods. I plan on giving it some time to see if my cycle goes back to normal, it's hard to decide as I am reaching the perimenopausal age.

Don't you be embarrassed, Arden! You had major surgery, and the body reacts in different ways as it heals. You've gotten great responses here -- bright red blood DOES mean it's fresh, and while it's possible you may have had a little internal polyp rupture, or maybe your pouch is bleeding a little bit as it heals ... it could be many things. Just monitor it. See if it happens the next time you exercise. Keep a little post-it with your recorded BPs for the weekend, too. If you see it resume in ANY way, give a call back and ask for the doc. At least in the meantime, you can be watching your body and feeling confident that you've got your eye on the situation. But NEVER feel embarrassed about speaking up about your problems -- that's what your doc, and your support community, are here for! :) Take care, sweetie.
