Question:
Has anyone done well post RNY and not used any protein drinks?
I'm just about three weeks post-op and I've tried several protein shakes and they all make me terribly sick. Afterwards I can't eat or drink anything for hours and then wind up feeling dehydrated. Can i just eat the protien that I can tolerate? MD wants me to get in 50-75 grams daily. Please help. — Donna0523 (posted on November 27, 2007)

You have my sympathy! I WILL NEVER drink another protien shake again! I
converted to protien bars. Somedays it would take me most of the day to
eat it. I would cut into small sections and eat it at my desk. The
Balance bars are my favorite. Good luck to you.

Hi, sorry you're having such troubles! I wonder if you are/have become
lactose intolerant? There are some protein shakes out there that seem to
work for folks who have lactose intolerance -- e.g., GNC carries them -- I
believe the clear Isopure drinks have been well tolerated.

Oh I feel for you. There are some really nasty protein drinks out there.
the only one I tolerate is Muscle Milk. Its premixed and in a carton. I
only like hte chocolate one - they actually come in many different flavors
(vanilla, banana, rootbeer, etc)... its the only one I drink. Good luck
finding something. I am 2yrs + post op and get about 100g protein a day so
have several bars along with the drink (it has 34g in the 17oz container)..
good luck!

You have to use some type of protein supplement. I use the IsoPure brand
from GNC that comes in several flavors. I mix mine with water, or you can
use skim milk. I use the Magic Bullet (online, Target, or other stores) to
mix mine, as it mixes the shake in the drinking cup. Maybe you're drinking
the shake too fast. I normally take 10-15 mintues to drink mine, and no
problems. Watch those protein bars. Many have high levels of sugar or
carbs, and a lot of those bars taste like eating cardboard. Yes you need
to stay in the doctor recommended protein range, and most people can't get
that much protein out of only food--protein supplementation is needed for
most people.

I don't like any of the protein drinks I have tried but I do love the
AchievOne drinks!

Dozens of protein drink brands are on the market--- many of them are very
high in protein compared with relatively low levels of carbohydrates. I
tend to look for those brands which have at least (in terms of grams) eight
grams of protein for every gram of carbohydrate. Many people eventually
find a brand they can tolerate (not necessarily like, but tolerate) from
bariatriceating.com, although there are lots of other sites. Many WalMarts
also carry protein shake mixes that are suitable for bariatric patients.
Protein is just too critical, both in terms of its role in weight loss and
its vital function in preserving muscle mass as you lose lots of weight.
It shouldn't be skimped on.
For me, I found the Nectar brand iced tea mix helped a lot as did the
WorldWide Protein pre-mixed shakes in the can (available at Trader Joes).

I hope you don't like your hair because if you don't get your protein in,
there's a high possibility that you will have hair loss! Same thing
happened to me. The protein powder I was using was no longer tolerable at
about 3 weeks out. (I was adding it to fat free milk, but when I add it to
water, it is more tolerable but yucky tasting). Someone on here suggested
Any Whey tasteless protein powder at GNC. It isn't 100% tasteless, but it
is VERY tolerable and when added to crystal light, ice tea or even
tropicana squeezes, it ever so slightly alters the taste. This was a
Godsend and I have had no problems getting in my protein needed on a daily
basis. Good luck and God bless!

Donna,
Have you tired the Isopure Zero Carb Protein Fruit drinks. Those might
work for you -- they are not shakes. Plus you can mix them with water.
Each has 40 grams of protein -- that right there gives you over half of
what you need for the day. I'm 9 months out and still do Dr. Atkins --
almost everyday --but lately I've converted to oatmeal in the morning and
who knows how long that will last; but I keep my Dr. Atkins handy. The
Isopure flavors I purchase are Apple Melon, Alpine Punch, and Grape Frost
--these are my three favs and I've yet to try any of the others due to the
facial reactions I recv from the sales personnel. Should you decide to try
them -- please do not try the Orange -- it is NASTY, NASTY. Let me know
how you make out.

Another good option is Unjury; I'm not crazy about the strawberry, but the
chocolate and chicken soup are delicious! Some pharmacies carry them, but
I've found the cheaper and easier way to get it is through their website at
www.unjury.com. They site also has a terrific support system; they e-mail
me pretty regularly to ask how I'm doing and encourage me to contact them
if I have any questions.

I HAD RNY 11/9 AND I CAN'T STAND ANY OF THE PROTEIN SHAKES EITHER. I DRINK
THE PROTEIN BULLETS, I JUST HAD A PEACH ONE. THE SMALL ONES HAVE 27 GRAMS
OF PROTEIN AND THE LARGER ONES HAVE 42 GRAMS OF PROTEIN. I'VE TRIED THE
SYLVESTOR STALLONE PUDDING FROM GNC, ISOPURE DRINKS FROM GNC, AND 6 OR 7
DIFFERENT WHEY AND NECTAR MIXES AND THE BULLETS ARE ALL I CAN TAKE. I HOLD
MY NOSE AND SWALLOW BUT IT'S SOMETHING I HAVE TO HAVE SO I MAKE MYSELF
DRINK IT. AT GNC THEY HAVE A LIQUID PROTEIN THAT YOU CAN TAKE 3 TBPS FOR 18
GRAMS IF I REMEMBER RIGHT AND I MIGHT TRY IT NEXT. ANYTHING YOU BUY FROM
GNC IF YOU KEEP YOUR RECEIPT AND DON'T LIKE IT THEY'LL REFUND YOUR MONEY SO
THAT HELPS ALOT. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS, DEBI ROBINSON

Some of them are horribly gross. But, I was cocky about the protein and,
well, I had to chop my hair short because, at 3 months post-op, I started
losing hair like a chemo patient! Keep trying! Personally, my favorite is
mixing the Nectar Fuzzy Navel with Sugar Free Tropicana Orangeade juice.
It's yummy! I drink two shakes a day. Each shake is 23 grams of protein
and 95 calories. Give that a try. Good luck!

I had RNY on 11/5 and really enjoy sf/ff pudding. I put 1 scoop of any
whey with the pudding mix and skim milk and can't tell it's in there. I
mix it in the magic bullet. Another good option is "Designer
Whey" available at Trader Joe's...I have vanilla and chocolate. You
can't tell it's in the pudding. Good Luck...you gotta get that protein in.

I too am having a heck of a time getting the protein in. I did find that a
scoop (20 gr pro) of the Unjury powder mixed into SF Swiss Miss hot
chocolate mix with water wasn't too bad! I drink that in the mornings now
- sometimes adding a quarter teas. of decaf coffee crystals. I also make
my own pudding cups and keep them in the fridge. Use 2 scoops when making
the batch up and spoon into 1/4 - 1/2 Cup containers. easy to grab on the
way out. You can also make Frozen pudding pops out of the same mix. One
last thing I use is the 5gr a bottle Kellogg's protein water mix. The pink
lemonade reminds me of crystal light. It's not much but every gram counts!
Good luck!!

I have tried several protein drinks and most of them were awful, even ones
people have said are good. I found one that I actually kinda like and can
drink. It's Unjury Chicken Broth. It actually tastes like chicken broth.
It is however a little off from chicken broth but I can hardly tell. It is
the only one I can tolerate and has 21 grams of protein per serving. I
hope this helps.

I hear and agreee with you they are not great........I used differnet ones
for the first 6-8 months then when i could eat 6 small meals per day i
stopped drinking shakes. My blood work at 1 year 8/07 was ok. no
problems.... I do drink a shake if i feel i didnt eat enough per day or if
i am sick & cant eat..I use carnation with milk and i add a powder mil
to it. i also add yogart ti it & make a smoothy... or i will eat a
south beach meal bar.....they have 19 proteins. some times i may eat 2 bars
per day ... the shakes made me feel too full & sick to my stomach..
once i drank them i couldnt eat or drink for hours.....I just make sure i
do eat 6 meals or snacks per day to make sure i get the protein,, if i am
not sure i just have and extra protein bar.. they are better tasting than
the shakes......so with the amount of food & the bar my protien is ok.

my husband is 18 months post op and does not drink any type of protein
shake or use any protein powder -- he gets all of his protein from real
food -- his labs are great and were just checked 2 weeks ago -- i think he
only drank the shakes for the first 2 weeks post op -- good luck to you :)

Try Beneprotien, you can find it on the internet. There is no taste to it
and 5gm protien per small scoop. I put 5 scoops in 16 oz of water with
crystal light. I know you will love it, give it a try.

you also have my sympathy.. I try to get one shake in a day and then
supliment with food throughout the day. What I do to help with that over
full feeling with the shake is not add so much water (I have not used any
skim milk to make my shakes) and add a little bit of SF pudding and make it
into a pudding.. using the magic bullet does help a lot.. you can make
your shake into what ever consistancy you desire.. also try halfing it..
only make half of what you would normaly drink/eat.. you may be overloading
your pouch.. I still can not drink anything over 8oz at a time and I can
never eat anything over 4 oz at a time..
I hope this helps..
God bless you

A friend gave me 2 packets of a product called Nectar (Fuzzy Navel) which
you mix with water. It mixes completely and tastes like orange juice. It
is good and has 23 g of protein. I just ordered a big jar on line for
44.95 (shipping and all). The site is SI03 (That's s as in Sam , I as in
Indean, zero , three).
I also got slices of fat free cheese which I melted into my soups. I also
bought a little can of Frito Bean Dip and put it into some of my soups.
Good luck with the protein challenge. Pat

I am almost 5 years post op RNY and was never able to stomach protein
shakes or bars. I did loose quite a bit of my hair, but I had a ton so it
didn't look too bad anyway. I had to be very careful to eat a lot of yogurt
and cottage cheese, but the thing I realized I loved that had a bunch of
protein was Hot and Sour soup from the local chineese food place. It was
cheap and easy.

My Dr do not want us to use protein shakes. I am about 10 weeks out and
have been getting about 60 grams of protein a day. It is possible to get
the protein you need from food but you have to make sure that all your
meals and snacks are protein first and then other things our diet is 70%
protein and 30% veggies. I eat a lot of eggs, cheese, chicken, fish and
I use soy nuts and edaname. The only carbs I eat are in the veggies duging
the weight loss phase
I have been using the special K protein water mix which has 5 g of protein,
instead of chrystal light because I get tired of drinking plain water and I
figure if I am going to flavor the water I might as well get some protein.
Good luck

This is what is working for me....I'm 2 weeks out today.... in the
Protidiet products they have a new flavor called cranberry green
tea.......you put the little liquid packet in your bottle of water. I do
4-16 oz. bottles of water each with one of these yummy packets in it each
day. Each packet is 15g of protien so i get exactly what i need, as per my
Dr. instructions of 64oz. of fluids and 60g of protein.......ta dah!!!!!
works for me, good luck in finding your magic drink!! ....took me awhile

Iospure liquid Already ready to drink. Comes in many flavors. Can't
stand to mix things that don't mix good and are nasty.... You get 40 grams
of protein in each drink. Luckily I can tolerate meats and only need one
bottle a day... Good Luck!

Hard to know what is the right thing to do, with the varying information
and rules each physician goes by. I'm a Kaiser - Richmond, CA patient ---
and all protein shakes, supplements, etc. are a no-no. In fact, the surgeon
said...if you want to get fat...take protein supplements, simple as that.
(Kind of makes sense when you see what body builders consume to gain weight
--- protein shakes.) I get all the protein I need from food -- labs all
great. As for hair --- doc says there is nothing you can do to avoid the
loss -- don't waste your money on expensive products claiming to stop it.
-- Love this doctor -- straight-forward & been doing the surgeries for
20 yrs.

My doc also did not want us to drink shakes if we could help it. After one
month, he told us to eat real food, and since I was able to tolerate all
foods, I did well. Your hair will probably fall out whether you drink
shakes or eat food. If you don't like the shakes ( and I surely did not),
then don't drink them.

You can get your protein in any form that suits you and your personal
taste. Personally, I have a recipe for a protein powder that I just love,
but I use it primarily when I think that my intake of protein in the more
usual forms (beef, etc.) is not sufficient, I revert to my protein powder
concoction. Remember that 75 grams of protein powder, or steak, contain
less than 75 grams of protein. There's other stuff in there too so you have
to take that into account when you do your weighing and measuring.
