Question:
6 week diet ideas

I'm looking for ideas of what to eat at 6 weeks. I've just been cleared onto solids, but some meats are too harsh. Can anyone give me ideas what they ate? Especially things that would be portable for work. Also, I'm dying for sashimi (raw fish, no rice), but the idea of chewing it up like we have to grosses me out. Did anyone eat sushi this soon?    — nicolerod (posted on May 21, 2006)

Nicole, it is so funny you say that you are dying for sashimi.... That is the only thing I have craved since the surgery and it is the only thing I am able to eat 4 oz of without any problem. I eat the Salmon Sashimi best. Everything else I can only have 2 or 3 oz and I am already 2 months post op. You will find you don't have to chew Sashimi too much. I have the most difficulty with chicken breast because it is too dry. The most I eat is Salmon, Tallapia and Tuna steak.

I started eating sashimi at 4 weeks out....I think it was my first meal when I was cleared for solids....now I eat it at least once or twice a week. I usually get tuna sashimi and king crab.....Usually I can only do 1 piece of tuna and 1 piece of crab....I also have some edamame (yum!). Enjoy!

Don't care for sashimi, never did LOL. But I do have a few ideas to help with the meats. I grind or shread meats in my food processor then add gravy to soften the meat up. Like pork with pork gravy, etc. For portabilty try the Atkins bars, they are the only ones I have found that aren't HORRIBLE!!! But watch the sugars in some of them! Good luck!

Haven't tried any sushi since my surgery 5 1/2 months ago, but some ideas are tuna salad, ham salad, chicken salad, etc. I cannot handle bread well, so saltines are my bread of choice. I also eat chili, beef or turkey. The beans are high protein, and with a little cheddar cheese, a great well balanced meal! I have found the South Beach bars to be good, portable food. They also have meal replacement bars......higher in fat, but if it actually is replacing a meal, not a bad choice. High protein, low carb. I have found Designer Whey is easy to take in the morning. I take 4 oz milk (skim or 1%) and 1/3 cup DW and shake. It mixes well and goes down easily enough. I have problems with potatoes with the skin still on, peppers, bread........forget biscuits. I am not religious about counting calories but do keep an eye on what I eat and try to balance my nutrition. I have found it hard to get in many servings of vegetables, though. Corn is not a favorite anymore. Green beans are easy. Enjoy your sushi......the rice probably won't bother you, either. As long as you are chewing well and eating it with protein.

Sashimi is a great source of protein and is a good thing to try as the portions are small. As I'm sure you are aware already, you will know RIGHT AWAY if it suits you or not. Tuna and Yellowtail worked well for me - as did salmon (not smoked - just regular - easier to chew). Stick with the softer fish until you are further out. Then you can try the eel and other things that are more dense. As for work - I LOVE baked sweet potatoes. They are easy to make in advance and carry to work - can be eaten hot or cold. Mix in some "any whey" taste less protein, some splenda and some cinnamin. YUMMY! Also, boiled or steamed SHRIMP with cocktail sauce (use the sugar-free catsup and lots of horseradish sauce). Each medium sized shrimp has 2g of protein. Go check out my profile. I list what I ate each day those first few months.
