Question:
I want to know the best protein drinks available.

I would like ot know what protein drinks you have used. Would you recommend or not. Why? I have a very hard time with chalky and thick drinks. Thank you in advance. Gary in Delaware.    — durenfam (posted on November 26, 2005)

Gary, I have tried only a couple of protein and like you said they were chalky, I tried Isopure from GNC it is more like a kool-aid drink , lots of protein (40 grams in a 20 oz bottle ) but I need to mix it with some ice and juice it is kind of strong for me,I bought some Pro Performance from GNC also, it is whey protein it is unflavored I mix it with my hot cocoa in the morning can hardly tell it is there. That has 21 grams of protein in 1 scoop. Good luck. Pam

If you are looking only for pre-mixed drinks, I never liked any I tried. I had the best luck with powders. Unjury has chocolate and vanilla flavors that may be mixed with milk, and they are hands-down the best on the market, IMO. Their unflavored is extremely versatile as a virtually undetectable stir-in, as well, for soups, puddings, etc. GNC's Protein 95 powders are also quite good; not gritty at all, and come in a variety of flavors. Good luck to you.

Hi Gary, I tried several sample of protein drinks and found them all to be chalky or taste like medicine! I was on Herbalifes protein drink for the past 5 months for breakfast and lunch and they are great. the one I was on I had to forgo because of too much sugar but the other two they carry are wonderful. Both have 15 grams of protein in an 8 oz serving, with 70 calories. You mix both with water. One comes in chocolate and vanilla and does have 1 gm of sugar and the other comes in mango/peach (my favorite),and wild berry. You can get some free sample packs by request from healthylivingnow.com As you can tell I am an advocate and so glad I am using these products. There is also a creamy chicken soup that is great! Same calories and protein. I split the portion on everything in half and have them through out the day. Good luck. I had my surgery on November 21st and am doing very well so far. Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Deborah

Gary, protein shakes are an acquired taste. We all have different tastes we can tolerate. I am not sure anyone can recommend anyone to you. I would suggest that you try to obtain samples of all that you can...There are lots of sites that will do this for you.....Unjury does samples at PMRI if you attend those support groups. Nectar and others can be bought in sample size on line with Vitalady, and Susan Maria's site. They are reasonable and the samples do help to determine what you like and let me tell you....the pouch knows what works for you. I am a fruit juice drinker from my post op days so I found Nectar Roadside Lemonade, Strawberry-Kiwi, and Orange worked for me. Every now and then I will do unflavored Unjury or chocolate but milk and I aren't really that good of friends these days. I did sample Profect and liked the sour tasting melon vs the berry one. I thought the berry one was too sweet. I guess I could have watered it down but with it being premade I did want the sample to be as they want it to taste to me. I don't think any of these drinks are chalky or thick...I water them down 8-10 oz with fruit2o that the consistency is like a juice.

Hi Gary- I tried several of the powdered and, although I can tolerate them, I really don't like them much. Then I discovered AchieveOne bottled protein drinks. They are a wonderful alternative to mochas and lattes, tasting very much like the bottled Starbucks Frappuccino drinks, yet they have 20 grams of protein, 0 grams of sugar and only 120 calories per 9 oz. bottle. They come in four flavors: Mocha, Cappucino, Vanilla Nut, and Hazelnut Creme. I drink one for breakfast every day, and I actually look forward to them. Sometimes, for a treat, I'll allow myself another one later in the day. They are a bit expensive, but I feel they are worth it. I first ordered them from www.bariatriceating.com, then directly from the company, but my shipments kept coming with broken bottles. I talked my favorite grocery store into carrying them and it has been really great for me. Good luck! By the way, thanks to AchieveOne and really using my tool, I am 11 1/2 months out, but have already reached my goal, having lost 170 lbs. Try them!!!

Hi Gary, I had the same problem that you do. I just didn't like any of the protein drinks I tried. Then I tried some samples from bariatriceating.com. The lady on this site had RNY also & tests all the protein drinks. She only sells the ones that taste good. Of course, we all have different tastes. I still don't care for any of them cold, but I have found that I like the Elite brand of protein she sells. I heat water in my coffee pot & add just a little water at a time to make a paste & mix until smooth. You don't want it too hot or the protein will rubberize & lump up. I then grandually add the rest of the water to make a cup while stirring. I particularly like Cafe Mocha & Chocolate Mint this way. I also tried Cappuccino but it tastes too sweet after surgery. I don't have to force myself to drink these this way. I really enjoy these protein drinks now. The Matrix brand, Perfect Chocolate tastes like hot chocolate & does not taste like a protein drink when mixed this way. However, just after surgery I had a problem with lactose intolerance & a problem with aspartame. It has concentrated milk protein & aspartame in it, the Elite brand doesn't. I've overcome these problems now & plan to try it again to see if it still makes me nauseous. I had surgery on 7/13/05 and am down by 57 lbs. Also, bariatriceating.com has great service. Everytime I've ordered the service has been great! Good luck to you.

I like the Nectar ones. Lemon Tea, Roadside Lemonade, Strawberry Kiwi. The mix with water very easily. I put in a shaker, the protein powder first and then add 8-10 oz water. Shake for a few seconds. I then pour over ice. They have 21 grams of protein. I have bought them locally for about $27 a container, and I have bought them from bariatriceating.com. Good luck.

I use Isopure, but I only can tolerate the dutch chocolate, which I mix with Hood Carb Countdown Dairy Beverage. Both were recommended by my certified nutritionist. The Carb Countdown is lower in sugar and higher in protein than milk, and together with the Isopure gives me 60 grams of protein in six ounces! You get used to the taste after a while, but it is NOT my favorite drink.

Unjury is the way to go. I use to recommend trying different samples, but have come to realize that I should suggest Unjury first. It is hands down the best out there. I prefer chocolate best, but the unflavored is trully unflavored and you can add it to so much, it is terrific! www.unjury.com

Gary- I had a really difficult recovery post surgery and wasn't able top tolerate most protien drinks. What finally worked was Nectar brands and Matrix vanilla. They are smooth and light. Not thick at all. It took a team of post gastric bypass specialist to stabilize me including a endoronologist. And they recommeded those brands. Mixing Matrix with lowfat milk or lactose free mix also stablizied some of the nutritional challenges I was personally having. I get my products from www.bariatriceating.com prices are great.

Hi Gary in Deleware. This is Alison in Idaho here. I had open rny in sept of 2003. I have used several kinds but I have found that 100% whey protien mix from GNC is the best for me. I too do not like anything chalky. There are several flavors of course but I use the vanilla or french vanilla. It most certainly is not thick. It does not require using the blender and I like that the most!!! If you have any questions as you head down this journey please just give me a shout. alison in Idaho -192
