Question:
I am four weeks post op today, and I have been craving ice cream
I know it's not good for me, but, I just have to have a taste of it! I had a LAP/RNY on July 11th. I have heard that processed "sugar" causes the "dumping syndrome", and I have not experienced that so far, and I have tried lots and lots of different kinds of food so far, so I am just wondering if I should try it??? Thanks so much!! — Carol D. (posted on August 8, 2002)

Hello,
I am currently eleven weeks post-op, I too have started craving
milk shakes. However I've come too far to go back now. However
I experimented with some frozen fruit and came up with this a
wonderful treat. I use two or three strawberries, five or six
blackberries, half of cup of non fat milk, a huge scoop of
frozen cool whip and 1 pack of splenda. You can adjust
this receipe to suit your taste. BI swear it was like eating
ice cream.

Try a no sugar added klondike bar. They are fab. I can only eat about 1/2
but my son is happy to finish it for me. :0)

Edy's butter pecan....no sugar added....need I say more. Yes, I must, most
old fashion ice cream shops have sugar free ice cream and make great banana
shakes. Remember "treat" yourself wisely.

Blue Bunny makes a Fat Free-no sugar added-made with splenda ice cream. It
is wonderful!!! I cannot taste the difference between it and real ice
cream.

Try it! you'll get nauseated feel horrible and never want it again!
That's the whole point. Just make sure you are next to a bathroom!

I was craving ice cream about 2-3 weeks ago. I got a McDonald's reduced
fat ice cream cone and ate it (but not the cone part). I didn't get sick
and I knew I had had a yummy treat but didn't need to eat any more than
that. So all was good.

have a good humor suger free fudgesicle - they are the best-they don't make
me sick and have very few (maybe 40 cal).

I second what Connie said.. try the no sugar added reduced fat klondike
bar.... they are very good.. I cut one into quarters and had a quarter
every other day.. my partner was happy to eat the rest of the package.
They really help with the craving for something sweet.

I also had one of the Klondike bars in it was goooood! Baskin Robbins also
has s/f, f/f ice cream. I've never had it, so I don't know how good it is,
but I am sure it can't be that bad - I mean after all, it is ice cream. I
had a craving one day and went in, but when I saw that they were all out of
the chocolate chip and only had flavors I wasn't really into, I passed on
it. Then the craving passed. Sometimes waiting it out isn't so bad. But,
of course should the craving come back with a vengance - I'll keep my
fingers crossed that they'll have some Choc chip in stock!

When I have a craving for ice cream, I eat Mayfield no sugar added
fudgsicles, or brown cows. Both are yummy, low fat and only have the
natural milk sugar. I've had no problems and it hasn't slowed the weight
loss.

I'll second what Darcee said!! I am 9 months post, and never have tried
sugar in large quantities. I have had small tastes here and there, not
wanting to test my limits. Well, I'm on vacation, where I don't have my
'regular stuff' convenient to me, and I tried a 1-scoop ice cream cone.
First time I have thrown up since my strictures at 5 weeks post. Horrible
stomach cramping, sweats, dizziness, and horrible diarrhea! And I was ON
THE ROAD in the MOUNTAINS. It was just awful. Needless to say I will
NEVER eat another ice cream again! Unless it is S/F of course. You can
learn the hard way, and learn good, or just take everyones advice and play
it safe.

I'll 2nd, or 3rd? the SF Klondike bars. Yum!! I've tried some of the SF
ice creams at Baskin Robbins but they usually only have 1 or 2 flavors.
The coffee mocha wasn't bad. I've also tried a few of the SF brands in the
super market but haven't found one I've liked yet-wish they weren't so
limited in their flavors. Not everyone likes vanilla or butter pecan. And
I wish they had Blue Bunny in my area-East Coast, as everyone seems to like
that brand. I'm staying away from regular ice cream as my doctor said that
you are more likely to dump on icecream and liquid drinks than you are from
cakes/cookies.

hiya
i say go for it, just be near a bathroom! you will have learn your limits
"real" ice cream is too sweet for my tastes now (!! never thought
that would happen) but i like luigi's frozen lemon ice...yes it has sugar
in it but it's also kinda tart... i don't eat more than 1/4 of one
i tend to prefer sweets that aren't very sweet, like i love kettle corn
with it's salty/sweet taste tho sometimes i do want a melt in your mouth
kinda sweet and chocolate is just WAY too sweet now...heck even jello is
really sweet to my tastebuds now! the only way to find out how you're body
will respond is to taste stuff...(while near a toilet! lol)
take care,

Carol, you have had some great advise on alternatives to regular ice
cream.
One thing I would mention though, is for you to define what you are really
craving. Is it the sweetness of ice cream? Is it the texture? The
coldness?
I have found when I "think" I am craving a particular
"no-no" food I contemplate wht I am really wanting, (for me it is
usually something crunchy) and I find it is not really the food I want, but
the texture, then I find an acceptable subsitute.
This process has been very enlightening for me to learn how I aquired many
of my previous bad habits, and poor food choices.
Take care,

I absolutely LOVE ice cream but I've found alternatives that are wonderful.
Blue Bunny makes the best SF items...they have Healthy Smart chocolate and
chocolate swirl bars, orange/cream & raspberry cream bars (these all
have 4gr of protein), they also make the chocolate covered crunch bars and
chocolate covered bars (like klondike), then there is the Bomb Pop--these
DO have a bit of sugar in them but I've had no issues...I LOVE THESE! And
finally Dole has no sugar added fruit bars (grape, strawberry, raspberry)
that are very very yummy! I hope this helps you---just be careful if you
do try the real stuff be at home. I've never dumped but I hear its not too
pleasant....

I like Healthy Choice No Sugar Added "Vanilla" and
"Chocolate Chip Mint". It is very low on sugar, and I think low
on fat. Although I don't worry about fat. It's low in calories though which
is a plus. And it's "edible" (sp?), which is the main thing. ;)

I crave more ice cream now than I ever did. I've tried Good Hummor and
Kroger Brand sugar free fudgesicles, Kroger Brand sugar free creamsicles,
Healthy Choice Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Baskin Robins s/f Jamoca
Almond. For popsicles I've had s/f lifesavor brand, s/f Good Humor, all
natural Dole bars, Dairy Queen s/f ice cream bar.
I haven't had any problems with any of it, the sugar free creamsicles are
my favorite because you get popsicle and icecream. I also keep some of
these items at work for me and my co-workers, my co-workers luv 'em too. I
don't eat them all the time, but it's nice to have when you get the
craving.

Boohoo! All of you folks talking about yummy sugar free ice cream doesn't
help me a bit! What about being lactose intolerant? Lactaid tablets don't
help either :( I haven't tried any of the sugar free ice cream yet because
of this fact! I told my boyfriend it's the price I pay for having loved ice
cream so much pre-op. I even went so far as telling my 16 year old son it
was his fault -- Dairy Queen came out with the blizzard the same year I was
pregnant with him. I fell in love with blizzards, almost as much as I did
with my baby. LOL Can you all imagine if Winnie the Pooh had WLS and
couldn't have honey?!? Oh the humanity! It's the equivalent to Anna not
having ice cream! ;) (((HUGS))) to all. - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -45lbs. p.s.
I know it's really for my own good I can't have the ice cream, since it's a
weakness. I guess I'll live.

Well - first off, you shouldn't have it. *heh* You know that, I know. But
if you MUST have a taste, I'd recommend a soy-based ice cream... What I
have in my freezer for those times I get a craving (which is about once a
month thus far) is Soy Dream Lil' Dreamers - they are about half the size
of a regular ice cream sandwich but taste EXACTLY like a good one. Plus one
sandwich only has 3g fat, 7g carbs, and 60 calories. [Which is a LOT better
than most 'fat free or low fat ice creams]
