Question:
How ( tests) was your problem diagnosed correctly and who determined it (MD or GI)

I am wondering for those that have suffered post op complications years after RNY what tests finally determined the problem and who was it that finally found the problem. What are the common things that happen with the bowels making havoc on life for us. My situation is I know there is something not right about the abdominal pain, distention, and other symtoms I have had since my last pregnancy 2 years ago but with so many disorders that can occurr it is difficult to know who the best person is to see and explain the lenghty symptoms. The majority of people will say go to the surgeon that did your procedure - however after bieng a nurse for 3 years now I know they don't always do the tests to find out the cause of the problem and they frequently relocate. Is a GI specialist the best way to go? 7 years post op    — rgreathouse (posted on September 7, 2009)

Hi, I would start with my primary DR.take all your past info and TALK to the DR. If the primary doesnt listen..find yourself a new one that IS there for you. As a nurse you know it is proccess of elemination sometimes. Being this long after surg..you can have many other things going on. Have you always taken your protein correctly and your vitamins? When was the last blood work done? There are soooo many things to look at.Please take care of yourself.Best of luck..let us know how you are...please?

I would recommend a bariatrician whether it is the one who did your sugery or not. Personally I have found that most PC's, have limited knowledge about the WLS patient. I don't mean this disrespectfully. But, for example, they are constantly trying to give me meds that I cannot take, being a post by-pass patient. Even if you went to your PC and they sent you to a gastroenterologist, he might send you back to the bariatrician. Good luck!
