Trash it. That much caffeine can aggravate your pouch.

There is also the factor that it is a diuretic. It causes you to LOSE
water. Many folks with Weight loss surgery have a hard time getting ENOUGH
water as it IS because we have such a small stomach or pouch. Add to that
the EXTRA burden of drinking MORE to balance out the effects of the
caffeine, and you may have a problem with dehydration.

Also, caffeine is a stimulant. Stimulants increase appetite.

My doctor only had me off coffee for three months. Ask, maybe it will be
OK later. He still perfers that we drink Decalf when we have coffee, but
it was non for the first three months.

Caffeine can irritate the pouch, so you do need to be careful, especially
at less than 6 months out. However, many of us tolerated real coffee (in
moderation) mere weeks out of surgery. Regarding the diuretic effect,
drinking lots of fluids also has a diuretic effect and a study from the
University of CT said that, among habitual coffee drinkers the diuretic
effect of the caffeine was negligble (and no greater than just drinking
that much non-caffeinated fluid). Lastly, although some say that caffeine
can increase appetite, the fact remains that it is a common ingredient in
many diet pills because it has tended to reduce hunger.

caffeine is said to also to contribute to ulcers (I know of of post rny
patients who are more than five years out and have never stopped their
caffeine and have had no problems) It varies from person to person. I
also am friends with a couple of RNY surgeons who say limited caffeine is
fine if you toleratre it when you drink it

The only reason to stay away from caffeine is that it is a diuretic. I
drink caffeine on a daily basis. My dietician says caffeine is okay as long
as you drink an addtional 8 oz of water for every 8 oz of caffeinated drink
you have. That way you wont get dehydrated.

Caffeine also causes your extremities to be cold. Doctor told me to switch
to decaf coffee because of this when I complained of being cold all the
time.

Caffeine will also cause your body to not absorb as much calcium as it
normally would.
