Either one, I just spoke to my assistant surgeon yesterday and it's
whatever we can tolerate after surgery. My surgeon's office is ranked
number 1 in Georgia and number 2 in the United States. Good luck and God
bless!

Hi Nicole,
We as bariatric patients are required to take calcuim citrate (only). I
messed up for a while and got the wrong kind went to the Dr. and he advised
me to get back on citrate right away. The nutritionist will also agree.

Female Gastric By-pass patients are usually told calcium citrate is better
absorbed. My doctor told me that male patients can absorb any type of
calcium, but female patients need the calcium citrate.

I was told by the bariatric hospital nutritionist that the difference in
absorption between calcium citrate and calcium carbonate is small at best
and that either is fine. Having not looked at the data myself, however, it
would be worth researching. TUMS (calcium carbonate) are so easy to take
and inexpensive compared to Calcium citrate products. I'm using both and
alternating until I do some further investigating.

Citrate is also the only one my group says is adequately absorbed, and
therefore Tums isn't.

Hi Nicole
Calcium carbonate requires stomach acid to break down the pills and the
citrate does not require it. It is better to be safe than sorry, if you
take the carbonate and then find out later that your body has not used it.
Good luck.

My surgeon and nut. said either is fine but if you choose to take the
carbonate should eat first then take so you will absorb better.

Hi Katie..as so many before me have said, citrate, all the way. And
remember, you need to take it (if it's powder form) four times a day at
best. Your body can only absorb so much a one time so you need to take it
several times throughout the day, I use UpCal-D, it can be ordered in a
canister or in individual packets from colonialmedical.com, I will be 8
weeks out on Wednesday and I am still on my 1st canister (but I use packets
when I'm out)... I believe each canister has 277 doses and it really mixes
easily with any liquid. I even know folks (not me tho--) who will put it
on their tongue and wash it down with a drink of something. Anyhow...if
you take more than your body can absorb at one time then it's just being
washed out of your system and not being used as it should.
Good luck to you, Leslie

Calcium CITRATE is ideal for us bariatric patients for the reasons
mentioned above. Try to avoid Calcium CARBONATE (Tums etc) because
carbonate is notorious for contributing to kidney stone formation. I've had
some kidney stones and you do not want that kind of torture and pain. I
recommend CITRACAL PLUS (it has magnesium and other minerals in it) 2 tabs
twice daily - make sure to separate it into twice daily so that your body
can absorb it. Also do not take within 2 hours of taking a multiple vitamin
with iron. Iron can prevent absoprtion of calcium. Good luck.
