Question:
What is the quickest way to drop the pounds before surgery.
My husband has been doing the protien shake twice a day and one regular meal for 2 months and he is losing it extremly slow. He needs to drop 25 more pounds by the end of the month, any suggestions?? — MySonsMama (posted on November 3, 2007)

my name is Terence I think you need to leave the protein shake along and
just start eating three meals a day. Leave the starches alone and eat meat
and veg stay off the sodas.

Exercise is the anwser. Also its hard not to cheat a little and have a
secret snack.

How is his water intake?

Its all in the intake of food. "You can be in a coma and lose
weight". Since he is already exercising, he must cut back in food
still more. It will be worth it after all..good luck to you both.

I had to do a 2 week liquid diet before my surgery and it really works if
you can do it.

Does your husband work with a nutritionist that's associated with his
surgical group? If so, she would be the best to help him. If not, I just
had a visit with mine who told me NOT to do the protein shakes - I had been
having one a day to try different ones and get in the habit, but she said
they want me to learn how to eat as I would eventually eat postop. So, that
means 3 meals and 2-3 snacks daily (eating every 3 hours), drinking the
amount of water they say (generally 2-3 liters), and she has now bumped my
walking program to daily. If I can do this and still lose weight the way I
have been (I've lost 20.4 lbs. in 10 weeks) then she said I'm nutritionally
ready for surgery and after the next visit in 5 weeks I won't have to see
her until after surgery. Another thing - I've cut WAY back on my carbs - I
have none for breakfast - just generally some form of protein and fruit -
and usually only have some with my main meal - and I save it to eat last
after my protein and then vegetable and have it only if I'm still hungry. A
good breakfast treat I occasionally make is my "Kathy McMuffin"
with a Thomas' Lite whole-wheat English muffin, an egg fried in Pam, and
slices of FF American cheese and Canadian bacon. YUM! I hope this info is
helpful.

I was on an all clear, sugar free diet two weeks before surgery and dropped
17 pounds. It was difficult but knowing the outcome would lead to surgery
and a new life helped me get through it.

Nancy, your husband needs to be faithful to the task, that is all he can
do. You don't mention water or exercise, so that is where I would suggest
you visit. Bump up the water, cut all other fluids except for the protein
drinks, no caffine, no soda, no coffee, and exercise. Walk, run, crawl,
and do it for at least an hour. Walk around Wal Mart, walk around the
block, walk the mall. Unless he is unable, he may have to fight for these
25 pounds. Some people just lose slowly. This is where being faithful
will count. Present your records of faithfulness (keep a log), and your
doctors will have no reason to complain. But please exercise and drink
water and log your day in diet, exercise and water. Take care. Patricia

I think that he needs to eat. Have you ever heard of eating to lose
weight? I don't care how mucn he exercises, etc, it won't work as long as
the body feels that it is starving, it won't let go of one pound. He needs
to eat healthy and comtinue his exercise. It will work, believe me. I
have been there!

I had set my own personal goal prior to my RNY of losing 20 pounds and
actually lost 75 prior to surgery. I did a very low carb diet and
exercised 5-6 days per week at Curves. I would suggest the low carb diet
and a good walking program plus strength training (lifting hand weights).
Not sure how much this will help him lose, because the most I lost in one
month was 19 pounds.

I started the meat and veggies diet back in mid-July. I was allowed milk
if it was fat-free and of course all the water I could tolerate. :) I
ended up losing 27 lbs in the first 3 weeks. It was an awesome shock to my
system. I have been sticking to this diet until this week I changed it up
a bit because I wanted to get some more off before surgery. But up until
my last weigh in which was 4 weeks ago I had lost a total of 45 lbs since
mid-July. I go tomorrow for pre-op testing and will be weighed there.
Now the change I made to my diet this week, I have replaced my morning meal
with a protein shake. I wanted to try a few different brands so I know
what I will want after surgery. So far I've tried the Strawberry and
Vanilla Chike (which I found advertised on here) but I am going to be
trying some other ones as well. My friend Carol has a site that might be
helpful for you. Keep us informed. And I hope I've been some help.
Holler at me if you need any recipe suggestions. I've found some terrific
recipes that don't use carbs.

Thank you so much for all your help. My hubby and I talked it over and he
is going to stop lifting weights and focus more on walking longer
distances, we are going to drop the cards and have gotten the OK from our
Dr to do the all clear liquid diet before the official weigh in.
I will keep you posted :o)
Thanks Again, I feel the Love!
