Question:
Will my medicare pay for excess skin surgeries?
I am desperate to have my abdomen, arms, upper thighs, and buttocks surgically reduced. This situation is definitely taking a toll on my psychological depression. Help! — dsis611 (posted on December 1, 2003)

I'm NOT speaking from experience, but---my mother worked in a doctor's
office for many years, and she tells me that Medicare does not require
pre-approval on anything. IF your doctor/surgeon is willing to say it's
"medically necessary" for you to have this surgery, then Medicare
will pay. But in order to get that all-important letter of medical
necessity, you need to have plenty of documentation of skin rashes,
infections, etc. So every time you have the slightest rash, call your
doctor and make sure he puts it in your chart.
