Question:
Will I still be able to have a kid?
I am 22 and I have been scheduled to have my surgery on Feb.9. I have not had kids yet and I worried that I will not be able to after. (I know that I need to wait 2 years after surgery) Has anyone has surgery before kids? If so was your body able to provide the right amount of nutrition for the baby? The reason I am asking is I have heard of people who become malnutrition and hospitalized or bulimic — trinity P. (posted on January 13, 2009)

My co-worker's daughter had it done prior to having children after about 2
years she became pregnant after 13 years of trying she now has triplets
that will be 2 years old in March, she just had her revision surgery on
Dec. 23rd and is doing great. She had to have the revision done because
caring the triplets strtched her pouch. Also she was 40 years old when she

When I got pregnant I was 15 months post op. It was planned because I
wanted a baby and had trouble getting pregnant before wls and I was at a
weight that I was happy with. My pregnancy was great. My baby was healthy
and basically I really didn't have any problems. The only thing that I had
was low blood platelets and was taking prednisone my whole pregnancy. But
that can happen whether you have WLs or not. So they weren't really sure
if that is why I had that or not. As soon as I gave birth to my baby my
platelets were back to normal within like two weeks. For my vitamins I was
told to take one chewable prenatel (which i'm still taking because I'm
breast feeding) and one multi vitamin, iron twice a day, 1500 mg of calcium
citrate, and the b12. I had to up my protein to like 80g a day. Now of
course you have to make sure you gain weight while you are pregnant I
gained a total of like 45 pounds. I went from 172 to 218 I think it was.
When I went home from the hospital I was back down to 190. I haven't
really lost much since but I have been trying. I was told that when you
are breastfeeding it's hard to lose weight because you have to make sure
you are getting enough calories for the baby and when you don't your body
can think it's starving itself and it doesn't let you lose the weight.
Sometimes I lose like 3 pounds and then when I start eating more I just go
back to the same. I don't know but I heard alot of people go right back
down once they have the baby I just think I'm not because I'm
breastfeeding. All my labs except my platelets were good. It was a
natural child birth with nothing no pain meds or epidural. It went great.
Lots of people have very healthy babies after WLS. One thing you will have
a lot more Ultrasounds while you are pregnant. I think after I was 24
weeks they did one every month. The last couple months I had to go every
week for a non stress test. It was alot of doctor visits but it was worth
it. They just have to watch you closer to make sure your baby is growing
right. When I went she was always doing good and so was I.

You should be able to still have children barring any unforseen female
health problem. Have a physician check you out thoroughly before you try
to get pregnant and make sure they know about your WLS. You are 22 so the
odds of you having a healthy baby should be good. Good Luck and God

You need to look into all of this BEFORE you have surgery. I can tell you
this...Young women usually have NO trouble getting pregnant after surgery
because they malabsorb their birth control...(So I have heard...don't have
any proof of studies to show you) But I hear it all the time! Many women
gain weight and have to work extra hard to lose the baby weight afterwards
(Nothing uncommon with women without wls). But it's not impossible...Just
some hard work and commitment to get back on track. You can read over at
the pregnacy forum and ask questions there! DO IT before you have the
surgery! Put your mind at ease and just learn all you can...You might want
to wait on the surgery until after you have a baby if that is
reasonable...If not...KNOW the common risks if any, inside and out...so you
can make the best choices! Good luck to you!!

I had Verticle Banded Gastroplasty in 2003 and got pregnant with my little
guy in 2005. I only gained 19 lbs and gave birth to a 7 lb 9 oz baby boy.
I also lost that 19 plus 10 by the time he was 6 weeks old. So it can
happen it also depends on the surgery.

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I did have a baby after my surgery.
I was about 3 years out from surgery when I got pregnant. Thankfully I
was able to eat enough to have a healthy baby girl. She weighed 7 lbs 4
oz. Just remember to eat healthy and take your vitamins. Good luck with
everything. Julie

I had an open RNY three years ago. Nine months post op I had an unplanned
pregnancy. I gained 32 pounds during pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy
9.1 lbs baby girl. I would recommed waiting at least the 2 years and make
sure you have reached your goal weight before even trying for conception!
Good luck!
