Question:
Surgery in Mexico.
Has anyone here gone to Mexico to have a bypass done? It seems like it would be a refuge for Doctors who really don't know what they're doing or ar running from the authorities. — arruncomic (posted on August 30, 2008)

I just happened to see your post in the daily digest and had to share that
we recently had a member of our "Ontario Forum" pass away, while
still in Mexico after her surgery. It has left her family devastated and
looking for answers that aren't forthcoming. I'm sorry, but I would advise
against it myself. Good luck, though.

I had my surgery in Mexico on 6/27/08. I had the sleeve not the bypass but
i had a vitrually pain free, no problem surgery and recovery.
My doctor has done more WLS procedures than many US surgeons. He was caring
and far more attentive than any MD I have ever had in the US.
The hospital was top notch and language was not a barrier.
I do NOT agree that the MD's there don't know what they are doing, most
have been doing these procedures for much longer than most MD's in the
states.
I am not sure why you think the MD's there are running from authorities,
they are doctors that live in work in Mexico because it is their home just
like doctors in the US or Canada or Germany or any other country.
Additionally many of the hospitals down there are American owned since
folks here figured out it was a great investment since many many US
citizens go to Mexico for all sorts of surgeries that would be cost
prohibitive in the US.

Had my surgery with Dr Rumbaut in Monterrey Mexico. (Drs across the orld go
to him t learn bypass surgery) Love him & loved eveything about the
experience. There is a forum for Mexico Drs. here you can go to & ask
questions.
There are some bad ones to watch out for, but you have that even here in
the US.

I also had my surgery performed in Monterrey, Mexico by Dr. Rumbaut. He is
one of the top bariatric surgeons in the Western hemisphere. He performs
the surgery in Mexico for Americans whose insurance won't cover the
surgery, and for Canadians who can't wait 7 years for the surgery. I would
recommend him to anyone, anytime. Of course there are shoddy surgeons who
perform surgery there, just as there are in the US. Your surgeon should be
researched and checked out carefully no matter where you have the surgery
performed. The US does not hold the monopoly on qualified surgeons.

Go to this post and read the answers to someone who seems to have
feelings similar to yours. Some of the responses are crude and uncalled
for, but the message is the same - do some research before you make such
sweeping statements.
Standards of cleanliness, care, medical practice, etc. are good in other
countries besides the US, and there are thousands of people from the US who
have gone to Mexico for wls. They often speak of the standars of care
being BETTER THAN IN THE US. One poster who had wls in Mexico talked about
the rooms being steam-cleaned after each patient left the hospital, while a
patient in the US stated that there were so few people to help in the area
where her room was that her mother had to change her sheets.

The reason I made the above statement is because I've seen 2 specials on
t.v. and read more than one article about people who have gone to mexico
for surgery and had disastrous results.
I'm not making a sweeping statement about the quality of health care in
Mexico. I'm just asking about people who have had positive experiences
there.

The way your question is phrased makes it sound like the only doctors in
Mexico are those who have left the United States... not true at all. There
are medical schools in Mexico and native Mexican doctors who are quite
capable of providing safe, appropriate care.
There are a lot of reasons why a US doctor might chose to work in Mexico.
I'm sure that some of the foreign doctors practicing in Mexico are there
for the reasons you mentioned, but I think that the majority are there
because they want to practice medicine... they want to work with patients
and not spend all their time dealing with the crazy profits-before-people
insurance industry that dominates US health care.
It is extremely important to research the doctor/clinic/hospital you are
going to use regardless of its location.
Good luck.

Mexico is QUITE protective of it's sovereignty when it comes to it's
worker's rights. UNLIKE the USA, you CANNOT just walk in and set up shop.
Even if you are QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL, you cannot just set up shop in
Mexico. First, you have to PROVE that you can provide a SERVICE that is
not AVAILABLE in Mexico. There are PLENTY of surgeons available IN Mexico
for this type of surgery. The likelihood that you would get a US doctor
that is running to Mexico because he is not COMPETENT is nearly
non-existent. The penalty for setting up shop without a license in Mexico
is PRISON. They do NOT mess around there. They will not even HIRE an
American Doctor without the proper paperwork. An American Doctor's chances
of getting the clearance for THIS type of surgery is slim to none.

I had Lap RNY in Mexacli Mexico on June 28, 2008, with Dr. Aceves....I am a
5 star type of person...called me spoiled rotten....so I too was leery of
going but with a 7 year wait in Canada, I research carefully spoke to
others who underwent the surgery there and took a leap of faith.....THE
BEST DECISION I EVER MADE.
The hospital was five star....more like a resort hotel than a
hospital...the Drs more caring than any doctors I've ever had and very
knowledge....the surgery went without a hitch and had very little pain.
Do yourself a favour and call Dr. Aceves office...they'll look after you
from there.
