Question:
3 years after Roux-En-Y, can I use the Birth Control Pill?
I'm 3 years post op. and 38 years old. I've lost 100 pounds and kept it off for 2 years. I'd like to resume using the birth control pill. I've tried the patch, but I don't care for it. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Erin — ecalla_lily (posted on August 3, 2007)

My Doc took me off the patch because of the risk, i am back on the pill no
problem. Lighter cycle too! I am also older. (46)

from what i understand it depends on the surgeon !!! my surgeon says the
birth control pill is fine and never makes you switch from it if you are
using it preop. good luck. HOLLY

Im 4 years postop and will be 38 in November. Im currently having some
problems with my periods being really heavy and having lots of cramping. I
was told by my ob/gyn that going back on the pill was an option, but in my
case she didnt recommend it since I do malabsorb. I have a surgical
consult on the 28th for a hysterectomy since Im not having any more kids
anyway. I dont know if youre on the pill for birth control reasons or not,
if youre on them for say, heavy bleeding maybe you can talk to your doc
about having an endometrial ablation. I had one, it didnt work a whole lot
for me but it has worked wonders for quite a few women. Check and see what
you doc says. Good Luck!

Hi Erin, it has been3 month since my surgery. I am currently using the
nuvaring. It is a gel -like ring that you insert into your vagina. I am
really liking it, you don't have to remember to take a pill. And also when
I was taking the pill, I gain weight when I was taking them. Good luck
with your decision. God Bless, Vanessa

I was only 2 months out when I started back on the pill. I haven't had a
problem at all and even use the generic pill. (I am 41) I take mine first
thing in the a.m. According to my surgeon, there is no difference in
before and after the RNY surgery. Good luck and God Bless.

I was on NuvaRing before my surgery and my doctor took me off of it just
prior to surgery but told me that it was a great choice post-op so I went
back on it. I love it. I think I"ve been on it since it came out
because I'm allergic to adhesive so I can't do the patch and before I lost
my weight I had problems with high blood pressure. I haven't had any
problems on NuvaRing. You should discuss this with your doctor, but in the
meantime you can check out NuvaRing on line at www.nuvaring.com, if you'd
like. Whatever you decide, best wishes for health and happiness always.

Hi Erin, this is a question for your surgeon, but I would think that
physically speaking the pill is not an issue. The thing about artificial
harmones is they encourage weight stabilization and/or weight gain, and the
pill is notorious for this. Be careful. Patricia P.

My RNY surgeon okayed going back on birth control pills for pregnancy
prevention six weeks after surgery. No problems whatsoever.
