Question:
Daily protein and liquid amounts
I know I have read this many times but it has escaped my memory. I have had some memory loss. Anyway, what is the minimum recommended daily amount of protein in grams for a RNY recipient and how much fluid, on a daily basis do we need? Thanks for your answers. — Karen W. (posted on July 11, 2006)

I believe 64 ounces of liquids is the goal for us and the protein grams can
vary, dependent on your size. I try to get in a minimum of 60-80 grams per
day. Most of it is through protein supplements (drinks) and I count the
liquids, too.
When in the healing process, more protein is encouraged.

I have been told that you should try to get a minimum of 64 oz. of fluid a
day. Females should strive for at least 60 gms. of protein a day, while
males should be shooting for at least 75 gms of protein a day.

Hi Karen
Recommended protein intake post RNY varies from
varies from surgeon to surgeon, and somewhat from
patient to patient.
To give you a rough guide: we informally surveyed a number
of clinicians attending the American Society
for Bariatric Surgery annual meeting, and most were
between 60 and 90 grams per day.
The average was some where between 70 or 75 grams.
It is also good to get your protein from quality
sources of protein that have good levels and proportions
of Essential Amino Acids.

My surgon says 72 oz of water. Flavored waters are ok, but things such as
orange juice and milk do not count towards water and water added to protein
and ect do not count. So if you add water to a soup mix it is soup not
water. My surg. demands that we get 100gr. of protein via supplements and
that any protein from foods is just free gradis. Anyway I think you best
ask your surg. cause I know my sur. is more strick than most but I know
that at 4 years out that if I stick to the rules he has set for me I feel
better and my weight stays down but if I wonder off then that scary 5
pounds hops on.

Again, every surgeon has his/her patient guidelines, but mine says to get
at least 64 ounces of liquids per day (more in the warmer months or when
you are able to exercise to the point of sweating) and a minimum of sixty
grams of protein per day for women, more for men according to body size and
activity level. These are the bare minimum levels that they want me to have
each day; more is always better when I can do it.
For my surgeon, anyway, all protein and liquids count toward my daily
total. Carbonated liquids are forbidden, but a rare (and small) amount of
either alcoholic or caffeinated beverage is allowed, but neither of the
last two can count towards my daily total since they both have a diuretic
affect on the body.

I was told 60-90 g of protein and at least 64 ounces of liquid.
