Question:
My doctor said you should lose about 15 pounds in the first 3 weeks?

Just wandering how other people are doing. I had lots of problems (lungs) on breathing machine in ICU for 1 week in the hosp for 10 days. I lost 62 lbs at my three week appt.    — achambers (posted on May 30, 2011)

Hi... I can't remember how much weight I lost in the first 3 weeks but I can tell you I also spend 6 days in the hospital most of it in ICU due to congestive heart failure from fluid overload after surgery. I have been at goal since last spring losing 80 lbs total! :) I had my surgery December 2009. I had been told the more you have to lose the larger the numbers in the beginning.

I'm wondering if your surgeon said YOU should loose 15 pounds or everyone should loose 15 pounds the first 3 weeks. The amount of weight a person will loose depends on several factors including how much you originly weighed, type of surgery, and medical issues (pre and post surgery). My co-morb. were high blood pressure and depression so I was pretty healthy for an obese person. I weighed 253 to begin and @ my 2 week follow-up I weighed 198 (55 lb loss). At my 6 week follow-up I weighed 183 pounds (70 lb loss).

After my surgery, I lost almost 40 pounds in about 2 weeks time. I had to spend an extra day in ICU because of breathing problems and low oxygen levels. Since November 15, 2011 I am now down 100 pounds and only 140 more before I reach my goal and I am feeling great.

I lost approximately 25lbs by my 3wk appt. Due to internal leaking, they had to re-operate the night before I was supposed to go home but I was only in the hospital for an extra 2 days (5 days total). The rest was done following the diet plan at home. It's been 4mnths now & I am down 81lbs (from 342lbs). I agree with the other 2 posts - everyone is different & will lose weight at different rates.

My experience was a bit different. I gained 12 Lbs in the 1st month. However abouyt 45 days later I started shedding some weight. I was a slow looser in my 1st year, and I lost 102 Lbs only. The better news is I kept all the weight off for over a decade.

Everybody is different and I don't know why your surgeon would even attach a number to a time frame. It causes all sorts of head game reactions!

Hi I had my surgery May 2010, but I started losing around Jan. 2010, I started at 439 now I am 242, I can see my neck bones and collar bone now also ribs, I was in the hospital for almost 2 weeks due to I had a ventral hernia that collapsed while I was in the hospital it happen 2 days after I had my surgery, and yes I was in ICU too with a breathing machine, I had the gastric bypass done, the hernia repair I had done when I lost enough weight in Sept. 2010, I now hope to have my tummy tuck surgery soon. Maybe in Aug or Sept. of this year 2011. Good Luck with your surgery. God Bless too you.
