I had RNY and when I wanted just to chew something I chewed on chewable Vitamin C and Chewable Iron and Chewable Calcium..... I was getting my vitamins and got over the need to chew. I wasn't really hungry I just wanted something to chew on.....

No, do not eat anymore. The crumbs can get caught in the staple line and cause you to have a leak, which you do NOT want. Please try to follow your surgeons rules. It seems like forever, but it wont be much longer. Hang in there, you do not want to hurt your staple line.

I had RNY and ate soft and pureed food from the start...saltine crackers are soft food...What does your surgeon/nut say? Saltine crackers were on my first 8 week plan...No fiberous foods or crackers with seeds or whole grains though...You should just call the office and ask...Goldfish are not anything you need to worry about...but if you gotta eat something you might ask your doc about starting pureed and or soft proteins. Good luck!

I stuck to my surgeon's rules and if I wanted to feel like I was chewing something I ate sugar free popsicles, and sugar free jello. Boy did I eat a lot of popsicles cuz you sure miss that chewing. I know it's tough, but well worth it, you don't want to cause any damage. Congratulations on your surgery.

ask if you can chew sf gum.....as long as you don't have a tendency to swallow it!!! Other than sf popsicles there wasn't anything I could have. Hang in there. At the time it seems impossibly long, but when it is over you will be glad you followed through.

I would stick to things like popsicles, jello, broths-chicken or beef, making your own can be fun and you get the added pleasure of being in the kitchen for the future when you can prepare your own foods. I would stay away from sf gum and goldfish crackers-crumbs are the problem with any kind of cracker. Ask your surgeon if you may have plain yogurt; that would satisfy hunger, body's need for nutrition and so forth. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl, retired RN

I'm just out of surgery, too, and am on the liquid phase. I've started making slushies with apple juice, protein powder and ice. Sometimes I even throw in a different flavor of crystal light to change the flavor. Oh, I almost forgot about the jello jigglers! They're fun to eat and my kids love helping me make and eat them! Go out on a limb and try different things. Like someone else said, it's almost over.

I so hear you on this issue. I'm 11 days post-op and last night I broke down and ate 4 saltines. Boy they were good. No repercussion yet, but I don't thing I'll do it again until I get the okay. (Hopefully next Wednesday!) Hang in there - I'm going to and so can you! FatBoyNoMore a.k.a. Michael

Yes I so understand what U R going through. When I has the same surgery, I felt the same way. BUT remember your stomach is still swollen internally right now and if U eat a cracker or some thing it runs a good risk of getting stuck in the staple line or making you sick to the stomach and who wants that as I am sure you are sore enough as it is. All the suggestion of the SF pop, jello, crushed ice, chewable vit's all are good options. Real food will come along soon enough.

Christine, first congrats on your surgery. Next, girl you are not hungry, you are anxious. Anxiety comes out as hunger. It is too late to say eating a cracker is ok. You obviously passed the cracker fine, but you are not passing the test. If you doctor says don't do something, don't do it. No one said it would be easy, but you took the courage to have the surgery, now you have to take more courage to obey the rules, or you won't be successful in losing the weight permanently. I really encourage you to fight with yourself (head hunger and head issues are very difficult) to do what your doctors tells you to do, and stick with it. Weight loss has always been about diet and exercise. On the Biggest Loser TV show, there is currantly a man on the show that had RNY and gained all his weight back. His stomach is still small, but he ate himself back to severely obese (close to 400 lbs). Surgery is no miralce, and if you don't drink water, diet and exercise, then you cause yourself much harm. you can push through this and do well. It is just one day at a time. Take care, Patricia P.

Hi ! Congrtas ont he surgery. I would chew things like ice, popcicles, even fudgicles. No gum...causes too much air to get in. heat up v-8 and season it like soup. I added garlic and blk pepper. You will be on food soon enough. Then you can have lots of things. But chew ice or popcicles for now. good luck!! hugs, kim

you had MAJOR surgery on your intestines -- you need to follow your dr's orders and NOT eat ANYTHING until your dr feels as though your insides are healed -- you are not on a liquid diet to lose weight -- you are on a liquid diet so you intestines can HEAL

Patricia P got it right, not that the other responses are wrong. The issue is not whether you can or can't after only 5 days, the issue is why would you want to? Some tough love here.... you need to realign your resolve to conquer this issue now before you move on to solid foods to be successful. This procedure is just a tool to help, not a cure. A good craftsman uses their tools properly and keeps them in mint condition so they will work effectively when called upon to serve their purpose.

Congrats on the surgery, Christine. For me, I only ate foods that were no carb or low carb. I got over the carb craving and didn't want to start it up again. I ate cottage cheese on the 6th day, 3 days early. I haven't gotten hungry since my surgery, 11-04-08 and have to stop and think of when was the last time I had something to eat. I have lost 56 pounds, and stay on a no carb or low carb diet, eating all the meat, eggs or cheese I want. Today, 3 meatballs or 3 chicken wings fill me up! No carbs keeps the carb cravings at bay, and I plan to stay on this way of eating as part of my change of life eating habits from 11-04-08 on. I had my last fill 12-8-08 and will probably get another on the 19th of this month. I take supplements and protein tabs twice a day, my lytes are good, and I feel great! I have another 70 pounds to lose and so far my new eating habits are not to much of a challenge. Good luck to ya!
