Question:
Has anyone taken this sort of antibiotic?
I'm almost 3 months post-RNY and have strep throat. :( The urgent care doc prescribed Omnicef and said to open the capsules and mix w/ applesauce. The pharmacist was concerned because I'm allergic to cillins and there's a rare cross-reaction. So I have Benadryl on-hand and made my family aware of what's going on. Also did my homework and found out I can't take it within 2 hours of vitamins or iron. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has been down this road-- especially in regards to combating a major infection w/ the malabsorbption issue. Thanks! — snickersblk (posted on January 7, 2009)

I generally ask for liquid antibiotics instead of capsules. I recently had
hernia repair and panniculectomy surgery with liquid narcotics and
antibiotics.

I agree with the liquid antibiotics but not penicillin. I would call back
the urgent care center doc and let him/her know that I was allergic to
penicillin. Doctors don't always think. If you aren't allergic to sulfas
or mycins; streptomycin would have been a better choice. No allergy and in
a liquid form easier to take. Liquid antibiotics are sometimes more costly
but well worth it if there is a problem. I have a son who even to this day
at 24 years old takes liquid antibiotics because he can swallow pills very
well. The other alternative is an injection which would bypass the
digestive system altogether. Most expensive.
Anyways, these are my suggestions. Good Luck and God Bless,
Hope you feel better,

I dunno! I have not needed any antibiotics in years and years before
WLS...I just wanted to tell you to start on probiotics or eat yogurt for
like a week... after you decide which antibiotic you take since they kill
all the bacteria in your intestines...and you need that bacteria with your
altered plumbing! Just a suggestion!

Call your bariatric surgeon. That way you can get a good second opinion on
what would work best for you. Good luck.

if you are allergic to cillins why would you even consider one ?Call your
Dr and remind him u r allergic .There are other drugs available. When i have
to have antibotics my Dr usually gives it to me in a shot.I have taken Z
pack before but shot works best for me.I too am allergic to cillins. Please
be careful benedryl will not do the trick is u have a full blown reaction
trust me i 've been there and almost died from anaphylactic shock.

Hi all, and thanks for the responses. Especially the advice about the
yogurt! If I ever need anitibiotics again I will be sure to ask for
liquids. Anywho, the only side effect I've had is a mild headache, and took
Tylenol for my sore throat so killed two birds with one stone. The doc
actually reviewed my allergy info so I know he was aware of it. I haven't
had an anaphylactic reaction to it so he may not have thought it was a
major concern-- then again, it was one of those walk-in places, too.
Oh and to clariy, it's not actually in the cillin family, but on rare
occasion causes a similar reaction. Since my allergy hasn't been eaction in
the past wasn't life-threatening, which was the only reason the pharmacist
allowed it. Either way, will definitely talk options and reactions the next
time I need meds of any sort!
