Question:
Protein supplement; is it in addition to baby food, or counted as a meal?
Hi, had RNY (revision) 02/02/08 and am now in stage 3 of food. I am eating 2 ounces of baby food every 3 hours, mostly chicken or turkey because they are pure protein (8 - 9 grams per 2 ounce jar). I am sipping water/crystal light in between meals, chewing 2 Adult Centrum Chewable Vitamins a day, plus chewable Calcium/Vitamin D and liquid Vitamin B Complex. I know I need 60 to 70 grams of protein a day, which the baby food alone can not completely supply. My question is, if I drink a chocolate sugar free whey protein drink, or drink one of those 3 ounce "test tube" fruit flavored protein drinks to get protein, do those count as one of my meals in place of baby food, or are those in addition to the baby food? I have been mixing the fruit flavored protein drink (the one that comes in those test tubes) in to a bottle of water and sipping on it all day to get the water and get the protein. Those test tubes have 42 grams of protein and about 175 calories, no sugar, no fat. The whey protein mix is chocolate flavored and has about 26 grams protein per scoop. I have sometimes mixed 1/2 a scoop in about 4 ounces of milk and sipped it. I think the whey mix tastes a lot better but the fruit flavored protein delivers more protein when mixed in to my water. I am not sure if I am supposed to be counting those as a meal, or is that extra? Thanks — Gina S. (posted on February 24, 2008)

You need a TOTAL of 60-80 grams or protein daily. This includes food and
whey shakes. WARNING: only consume 25 grams of protein at one time, or the
remainder will not be absorbed by your body--also do not take calcium with
your vitamins or an iron supplement (iron and calcium bond together and you
do not get full benefit of them). I've used the shake as a meal before--it
just depends on your schedule. If it's meal time, and you only have time
for a shake, then do that. Even though you're eating baby food at this
time, please try to chew chew chew it. It gets you in practice to properly
chew real food in the near future. Swallowing food in larger pieces can
cause blockages, sever indigestion, or cause you to regurgitate. Hope
this helps.

Does the Baby food taste good and what brand. I need to be eatting it, but
to chicken to even try it. I had a re-revision of the RNY on 12/19/07, or
RNY for the 3 time. But my pouch is only 1/2 the size of a shot. The Doctor
had to make it real small, because of the problems I was having from the
first two RNY.

If you're not counting calories, why would it be counted as extra? If you
have the shake and baby food at the same time, it should be a meal or why
not replace the baby food witht the shake. If your target is more protein
then the shake wins. Were you told to eat every 3-4 hours and are you
allowed snacks, such as the protein drink?

That would be counted as a drink in between or you can replace it with a
meal. Whatever you would like to do. Protein makes you fuller and it
lasts longer. So you can decide what you would like to do on that one.

I use my protein as a drink, not a meal, but that doesn't mean you can't.
As long as you are getting in your nutrition, I don't think it matters
which way you label it. My plan is 2 oz breakfast w/ vitamin, protein
snack, protein drink (3x a day). Anything I don't get in during regular
meal times, I try to get in during the evening. When you have to work in
medications or additional supplements, it gets a little more complicated.
The best thing to do is check with your NUT and surgeon. They will have
your lab resu;ts and will tell you if you aren't getting in what you need.

The last time we calculated the PDCAAS score for what you call "test
tube" products, the score was only about 6 our of 100 for protein
value. In contrast, whey protein is 100 out of 100.
The PDCAAS stands for Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score.
It is the recommended methodology for evaluating protein quality relative
to the most limiting amino acid, according to the Food & Nutrition
Board of the Institute of Medicine (DRI Protein, IOM, 2005).
PDCAAS is also recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the
US
Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
A score of 100 is the highest PDCAAS score.

When I was at your stage, I would prepare a protein shake (about 2 -3 cups
by volume) from whey powder in the morning, before "breakfast".
Each shake contained 50 grams of protein, the minimum amount my doctors
said I should be consuming in a day. I would then eat my baby food (or
pureed food I prepared with a blender) meals on schedule during the day.
These were "complete" meals, what I was supposed to be consuming
at one sitting. Between meals I would take sips from my refrigerated jar of
protein shake as "snacks". I actually LIKE the taste of my
protein drinks so this was no problem for me. I would be sure to
"finish off" any of the shake remaining in the jar before going
to bed at night. Some folks reading this may cringe but it worked well for
me. So, the protein drinks are IN ADDITION to your pureed meals -- but do
not drink them at the same time as a eating your regularly scheduled meals.

Hi, My Dr. said NO baby food! Too much sugar. Use a blender and blend
real chicken or turkey. Have some cottage cheese. Good Luck,

Hi Gina,
I had a three hour nutrition class before surgery and a one on one with a
dietician. the class was the same whether you were having gastric bypass
or lapband. I had lapband on Jan 23rd. The suggested plan is as follows:
8oz of skim or soy milk with 100% whey protein isolate powder (twice a day)
I use unflavored Unjury powder because the nutrasweet bothers me - usually
headaches and I add 1 tsp of benefiber powder and a little liquid sweet
& low
Three meals a day spaced out with three chewable calcium tablets a day.
Breakfast also contains a chewable vitamin. - I use the Bariatric Edge
brand because it contains the right type of calcium (calcium citrate which
is better absorbed)
I puree roasted chicken, baked ground turkey and scrambled eggs, fat free
refried beans, veggies, cottage cheese and I have been eating some diet
jello because the amount of nutrasweet is so small it doesn't seem to be a
problem. I was told to avoide the jar baby food meats, but that it was ok
to use the fruit and veggies. Since I want to stay away from sugar and
flour, I puree the sugar free canned fruits myself which is a lot cheaper.
I have a baby cuizinart on the counter that I got at costco for about $25 -
it's a workhorse.
I'm only on my fourth week and I do have some abdominal pain which I think
is just gas because it is intermittent. I feel great in the morning but as
soon as I get in the truck to commute to work, the pain starts and pretty
much stays around all day but it's bearable for the most part. It may also
be due to not enough liquids because I'm only getting down about 20 oz a
day right now. I'm a work in progress. Best wishes on finding what works
for you too.
