Question:
Do Insurance companies cover plastic surgeries?
I am wanting to know if Insurance companies that cover the Gastric Bypass surgery--also cover plastic surgery. Due to sagging skin. — Syl P. (posted on March 25, 2007)

Some do and some don't- Kaiser no longer covers even the tummy tuck so in
my case the answer is no. However I have friendws with Tricare and the
gov't does cover the tummy tuck at least. Donna

They probably will if the sagging skin begins to cause additional
infections and irritations and the surgeon deems the surgery to be a
medical necessity. Like breast reductions can be deemed a medical
necessity if a woman's shoulders and back are taking a toll due to the size
of the woman's breast. Anything can be covered by insurance if the
physicians and surgeons write the informaiton up correctly --two words
"medical necessity."

Just like every insurance company is different regarding the coverage for
WLS, they are also different in regards to TT sugery after WLS. Most will
not cover it UNLESS it is deemed medically necessary. The designation of
'medically necessary' is repeated yeast infections, chaffing, etc. This
must be documented with your PCP, not just your word for it that it has
happened. There were more insurance companies that covered the TT after
WLS but there has been abuses for the procedure, so alot of insurance
companies are removing it from their policies.
