Question:
How long until I can go back to eating.

How long until I can go back to eating everything I used to (except the bad stuff) but in smaller portions?    — jengriggs01 (posted on October 27, 2005)

I am eleven months out. Started at 214, and now weigh 133.5. I can eat a tiny bit of most everything, but nothing like before. Do not worry...your body will tell you. When I overeat, or eat the wrong things, I become jittery and nausaus. I have learned that it is just not worth it. I also will portect this size 10 with my life (MY goal is an 8), but if I never lose another pound I would still be incredibly happy. My best to you, and good luck. I would wait until about six months to experiment, then just a bite or two.

As the months go by, you will be able to eat different foods and you will determine how much and which kind. My first love was ice cream; I found out almost immediately that I no longer had a desire for ice cream. I was not able to tolerate it very well anyhow. Now if I want some, I just have a bite from what my husband is eating. Your body will tell you and YES, you will be able to eat what you like soon enough. For some people it is 9, 10, 16 months, for others it could 1, 2 or 3 years. Are you longing for something now that you feel you can't have? I ask because I never did. If I wanted something, I tried it. If it made me sicker than a dog, I never went there again. I remember eating a Chinese egg roll from Jack in the Box. It took me 2-1/2 hours, but I was able to keep it down; the first time I had a Monster Taco (ate 1/3) and that took me about 45 minutes. NOW, I don't care for either one. Good luck to you.

Hopefully you have a nutritionist on your weight loss surgery team. If so listen to what their advice is. Be carefully of advice from individuals, everyone is different and so is their digestive systems. If you don't have a nutritionist on your weight loss team, you might consider making an appointment with one. Check your local hospital for one.

Eat small amounts slowly and try everything. The only things I can't and, hopefully, will never be able to eat are processed starches in white pasta, white rice, white bread. I also feel bad if I drink carbonation. On the other hand, a little sugar isn't disagreeable. I also don't do well with too many things mixed together: chinese or mexican. So: sashimi's great: sushi (with rice) is out. Best wishes.

Doctors are all different on this aspect. Mine had me on full liquids for 4 weeks and then I could eat regular food. So basically I've been eating "normal" food since 4 weeks out....just in way smaller amounts than I use to. If you are doing the puree....just puree stuff and see how it tastes, some things taste ok pureed others NOT! LOL Stay away from white carbs if you can...substitute whole grain. Good luck. Carmen

As Linda stated -- your body will tell you. I haven't had the surgery, however, my partner has and as of October she is 2 years out. There are things she eat now that will immediately give her indigestion, gas or diarrheara -- and in some cases, depending on what foods they are -- it is immediate. Like ice cream -- very moderate in eating it now. Drinking beer -- gives her gas. Chittlin's -- she loves them and eat them in moderation. A 1/4 of a pint will last her about a week -- and that's not a whole lot. She has done well and I'm very proud of her. From being with her and watching her the one thing that I do know -- if you eat SOMETHING every two hours -- you will be fine -- yep even 2 years out. She will purchase lunch at work and will only eat a few bites and the rest is dinner. Or she may place it in the frig at work for the next day and have it for lunch. This is something she wanted for a long time. I looked at her Navy uniform in the closest the other day and it is tiny --she is 5'9" and was a size 12 in the Navy -- she said even that was too big. She starting eating the foods she liked about 6 to 8 months after the surgery -- but you want to take your time and your body --that little pouch -- will definitely let you know.

I am ten months out, and there are still things I cannot eat. i have trouble with steak (which I used to love), chicken, and sometimes eggs. The easiest things are lobster and shrimp. My doc told me to basically follow Atkins for the rest of my life and absolutely no carbonated drinks.. My neice, who also had the surgery, eats almost everything and has from about two months out. She eats goodies, just not as much as she used to, and she drinks sodas. She is still losing at alkmost two years out. You have to find out what is good for you. Everyone is different, and doctors have different guidelines.
