Question:
Want a revision from lapband which surgery is better ryn or ds. Not sure what to do.
I am wondering I have seen revision from ryn to ds. Is it easier to follow or less side effects. Wondering which to do could use some feed back. — pandavenise (posted on May 6, 2010)

Everyone is different, and that must be a decision made by you and your
doctor. The RNY is by far the more common and therefore they have more
experience with it, which some feels makes it safer. The other is a little
more radical and a little more effective. If you are a diabetic, cutting
the ileum effectively "cures" type II diabetes, and vastly
improves Type I (I went from 600-700 units of insulin per day to 48 units
per day). For long term, IF you stick to a lifetime commitment to your new
lifestyle, I personally prefer the Roux-en-Y or RNY, but as I said,
everyone is different and we each have different needs and tolerances.
What ever you choose, take it seriously and understand it's not a trial
offer, but a lifetime commitment to a new lifestyle.

As stated before the RNY is much more common so it is relatively easy to
find out accurate and current information about it. The DS is not as
popular and is harder to research IMO. Maybe you could check out
DSfacts.com? I also suggest checking out the RNY and DS surgical forums on
this site and see what our problems and successes are.
I chose the DS because I felt it would allow me a more "normal"
life. I really enjoy drinking while I eat which I have been able to do
since about 5 months post-op. I wanted the malapsorption to help with long
term weight loss. I wanted to have a normal albeit smaller stomach and not
have to deal with a pouch. I am terrible at dieting and I felt that the DS
allowed me a less restrictive diet since I REALLY like high fat foods.
Still, the DS is no guarantee, no magic wand. I'm one year post-op and have
no food restrictions at all. My wife is 17 months post-op DS. She can't
tolerate unground beef or any dairy and sometimes gets sick if she eats a
lot of sugar which is a very rare indulgence.
