Question:
Cheating on the liquid diet

How do you get through the 2week liquid diet. I do fine at work but when I come home and make dinner for the family I want to eat with them. What would happen if I did?    — Athinnermom (posted on December 9, 2009)

You really need to follow your doctors orders. It also helps you understand your dedication to this surgery. Are you really ready for this surgery? It will make your surgery easier as it shrinks your liver which makes it so much easier for the doctor to maneuver. You can do this. It is harder when you have to cook for everyone else. Fix their food then take your liquid drink to another room and relax. You will be so glad you did, beleive me.

Are you talking about the pre-op liquid diet? Nothing would "happen" if you cheated, but if you are considering cheating now, obviously you aren't ready for this kind of surgery. This is not a quick-fix-diet. I'm 10 years out from my original surgery and just had a revision last week. This is way harder than any diet you've ever tried. If you're not committed now, maybe you need to put it off for a while and really look at the reasons why you want the surgery.

I just posted a reply to someone who was asking about 'getting caught'. Here was my exact reply. I have to agree with everyone, there is no way of knowing if you cheated. If you cannot follow a week or two of simple instructions what makes you think you can follow some instructions the rest of your life? Maybe you should reconsider having surgery at this point in your life. If you are determined then stop playing games and do what you are suppose to do because no one else is going to do it for you. Good luck and I hope for the best. -Jaime

Pre-op it is really not a big deal. Post-Op... DON'T do it. Your stomach is not ready for it. Use your surgeons guidance on when to procede to the next stage.

It says your surgery is January, so I'm wondering why you are already on the 2 week liquid diet??? My surgery is Monday and I've been on one for 2 weeks but he wanted it immediately prior to surgery. And it's been difficult, but not impossible. I just try to stay busy and drink my shakes and water. I've gone to bed quite early a couple nights so I wouldn't eat, but I want this surgery and need it so badly that I'm not about to mess it up! There's lots of support here, and we've all been there at one point or another, or are going through it now, so turn to your supports and make your family eat sandwiches and clean up immediately, haha, that way there's no tempting smells in the house and it's not out in front of you! (lol, I still cook for my family, but not near as much since I'm on the liquids, it's too tempting)

Paulette, OMG I know how hard it is!! I am sitting here just four hours away from surgery (lap-band) and wondering how in the hell I made it through the last 10 days of a liquid diet! I'll be honest, I did break down on day 6 and have a piece of sandwich turkey (30 calories) and 1/2 banana. I felt so guilty at first, but then when I kept hearing of others who don't even have to diet, I didn't feel as bad. My doctor wanted me down 8-10 lbs in that time, and I am down 12.5 lbs, so I don't think that one little slip up did much damage. If anything it set me back on track. I'm not saying you should cheat, but just hang in there as best you can. Best wishes!!!

I think that maybe you shouldn't be cooking for your family at all. Your significant other should be doing that chore for now. You are trying to change your life and your family needs to understand this. If they can't understand then it is their problem not yours. It shouldn't be up to you to carry them right now, they should be carrying you. Maybe you should have a talk with them. Also try not to feel guilty for letting them fend for themselves, as life should no longer be about food to you.

According to my surgeon, some people are asked to loose weight prior to surgery to shrink the size of their liver. They cannot perform the surgery if the liver is too large (it is in the way and they cannot get to your stomach). There have even been times when they began the surgery and had to stop because of the enlarged liver. If you want something badly enough, you can handle anything for 2 weeks. There will be plenty of other holidays, and no one is asking you to never eat solid food again. Just plan a delicious, nutritious menu that fits with your surgeon's guidelines. Then once you are able to eat it, you'll enjoy it that much more. Start looking for recipes now...go to Chef Dave Fouts' website (chefdave.org) and join his monthly newsletter, check out his site, watch his on-line cooking show, and order one of his cookbooks. You'll get inspired. Also, find a weight loss surgery support group (ask your surgeon for one he recommends). You'll be encouraged by others who have been through similar experiences, be able to ask questions, and get informed answers. You'll also leave feeling motivated and supported. I wish you all the best as you journey toward good health. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

I am in week two of the liquid pre-op and heard today that my insurance is now backing out and I may not have the surgery as expected, but I am not cheating as it could be the difference between laproscopic and open surgery when they get in there. It is to shrink your liver so that they can proceed laproscopically. I don't want my whole stomache cut open, I've had two c-sections and know what that is like to heal from! My surgery is scheduled on Friday and I may not know for sure until Thursday!
