I'll be honest, I've been caffeine-free for nearly 5 months now since my
VBG surgery and I have no interest in going back on it. Kick the habit! I
feel SOO much better and actually have MORE energy. I'd recommend doing the
same if you've gone this long all ready.

I was never told I couldn't have coffee....the only thing I was told to
never ever have again was anything with carbonation as it could swell the
pouch....cause pain and other problems down the line.......

I avoided caffeine for the first 4 months or so post op. Caffeine can cause
dehydration, delay healing from surgincal procedure, possibly cause ulcers
at healing area. I drank decaf during this time frame with no problems. But
after those 4 months, I did use regular coffee. I have Lipton instant decaf
tea I use often during the week too. DAVE

I am 5 weeks post op. I have made me a half a cup of coffee maybe twice a
week for the past 3 weeks, honestly I cant even finish it. I get the taste
get full and cant drink anymore! I think if you have some follow it up with
lots of water, They did tell me that for the first couple of days caffine
isnt good but now they say I can have iced tea, I had about 8 oz yesterday
throughout a 2 hour period.

I have always thought of my surgery as a pregnancy...with the first three
months (of healing) being the first trimester...I did nothing but the rules
and pureed food for for 3 months...3-6 months I slowly began to add some
things back, such as veggies and juices and natural things and coffee is a
natural thing. But I only drank a half cup because it did seem to be a bit
strong on my pouch as was fruits and anything else acidy, especially things
like orange, apple, coffee, any fruit juice, onions! OMIGOSH onions killed
me...I kept my script of prevacid for those times...It felt like an ache in
the very very bottom of my guts. Prevacid was the only thing that helped.
It was about 6 mos when I was able to handle a little more acidy stuff
without upset, but only in moderation...Onions I could not even touch for a
full year. I eat everything now with no trouble...Always in moderation for
those things that are not exactly the best choices. Doctors used to think
coffee was bad for us...Not too many will tell you that now...There is no
proof that it is bad for the majority...Those with high blood presssure it
can be bad for because it does raise your heart rate for a short time...but
so does sugar and alcohol and cigarettes...When something falls into a
crowd like THOSE baddies, it is assumed that it is also as bad as the
rest. But that's not the case with coffee. It is said that the
antioxidant properties of coffee far outweigh the effects of caffeine.
Do not take Iron supps with coffee...They are enemies...That is the trouble
with antioxidants and even fiber...Sometimes they attack a vitamin as a
free radical or toxin ...Iron is not a friendly vitamin to start with, but
some of us NEED it. So just keep that in mind! I put protein powder in my
coffee along with some lactose free milk or soy and I get 32 oz of protein
every single morning to start my day in a large 12 oz cup that I sip on for
a good hour...I cut back from 3 cups (before surgery)to 1 cup a day...
Also dark roasted coffee has less caffeine that milder tasting
coffee...That was something that my logic got wrong for many years. Dark
roasted coffee beans actaully have to roast longer than a milder tasting
coffee...Roasting releases more caffeine from the bean, leaving you a mild
caffeine coffee with a rich flavor! Just a little trivia for those like me
who for years thought the darker the more caffeine! I happen to like darker
roast much better...so good for me! LOL

I was never told not to have caffeine, just to cut back and small amounts.
I have my one cup of coffee every morning (afternoon... I'm nocturnal) and
have no problems. If I have problems with acidic things, Zantac helps, it
is rare though.
I do enjoy an occasional iced coffee from Starbucks with soy milk and
Splenda if I am out and about. Yum.

My doc said I had to wait 3 months, and one day about 6 weeks after
surgery, not thinking, I drank about two sips and was feeling cramps and
pain in my gut within a minute or two. That did it for me. I not even
tried tea since. They say you need to wait until all internal scars and
tissue has healed and that is about three months. Best of success to you.

to best answer your question -- you can drink coffee -- but it should be
caffiene free -- the caffiene is a chemical that will make you hungry -- so
it's actually not the coffee you can't have, it's the caffiene -- you will
get used to decaf :) good luck

Hi Alicia,
I had lap-band back in May & waited 6 weeks before going back to

drinking coffee ...But slowly the taste came back to me....It took me about
2-3 weeks after my surgery...I have never had pain from drinking

the fact it just doesnt taste good....I have gone off soda's even just a
sip tastes nasty to me now...even diet !!!!
Good luck with your new life
