Question:
I have had 2 c-sections, will my surgery need to be an open one for sure?

Or is it possible to have a laproscopic surgery still? Will the healing process take longer with an open surgery?    — vickiesee (posted on May 30, 2008)

Nope! I had 2 c sections and I didn't need to have an open one. I even had a VBG surgery prior to having my gastric. It all depends on weight and how your surgeon wants to preform his surgery. Which ever will work best for you! Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I had two c-sections also, and was able to have my RNY lap. It will be two years the 2nd of June. No problems.

I have had 2 c-sections (bikini cut) and 1 stomach surgery when I was an infant. My dr says it will most likley (95%) that I will have lap. He says if there is a lot of scar tissue (like if I had 5 surgeries) then that is different but he rarely ever does open

I've had three open abdominal surgeries, plus a laprascopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), and I had a very successful laprascopic RNY.

Vickie -- whether you have lap or open surgery, at least in my case, had to do with weight and not with previous surgeries. I, too, had two c-sections before I had my VBG in 2000, and my surgery was open -- because I weighed nearly 350 pounds, not because of the sections; my surgeon didn't do lap on anyone who weighed over 300. I found that the healing from the open was a lot easier than the c-sections, because the cut is vertical versus horizontal, and on your stomach rather than just above your pubic bone. I had half the staples out when I left the hospital (about four days post-op, if memory serves) and the rest out about a week later. I had no trouble at all, and now the scar is a slightly raised white line from just below my sternum to just above my surgically-created belly button (from my abdominoplasty). As, at 51, gravity has done its work, so I'm not wearing midriff tops and bikinis anymore anyway, a stomach scar isn't a big deal.

Many surgeons are able to perform laparoscopic RNY on patients with BMI's over 70. At the time of my lap RNY I had a BMI of over 600 and topped the scales at 510, so weight and even body circumference is not necessarily determinative either for whether an RNY can be performed laparoscopically.

Make sure you have a good lap surgeon with a lot of experience. Open RNY is very painful and healing was a long long process for me.(6+ months) But four years ago, I prefered open RNY with my surgeon who had 15 years experience and prefered the hand stitching to the mechanical stitching done with lap. These days docs are getting more and more experience and have mastered this technique with little problems/leakage at the suture lines. Some doctors are not comfortable doing lap on SMO people and will do open RNY...I personally would have prefered lap...but trusted my doc 110%...It's been 4 1/2 years and I am loving my open RNY with one thin 4 inch scar that is barely noticable...and no complications due to the surgery whatsoever! There are still a lot of scars with lap...but recovery is far faster from what I understand...Open took a good 6 months of pain that went from severe to mild in a year. Yeah...was not all that pleasant...but I didn't let it get me...and I was just so happy to get thinner and healthier and ultimately happier...So no matter what surgery you have...It heals...and it's not as bad looking back...Good luck...Look towards the future...that where the prize is..

It depends on your surgeon and any scar tissue you may have. I had 2 c-sections, a hysterectomy and my gullbladder removed and I didn't have to have an open surgery. My surgery was last Oct. 31 and I'm down 98 lbs. Good luck.
