Question:
My consult is on Friday for gastric bypass.
I am curious as to what a daily menu is for a post op gastric bypass pt. Including snacks and everything. Can someone please comment as to what a day is like food wise? — Crystal H. (posted on August 29, 2007)

Sugar free jello, mashed potatoes, yogurt, protein shake, chicken or beef
broth. Keep with soft things. You do not really want anything you will have
to chew a lot. I stayed on this diet for my first two weeks then I added in
baked fish. But go very slowly when eating. Take your time, do not be in
any rush to eat anything because if you it will come right back up and
TRUST ME that is a bad feeling so be very careful.

I think all WLS center do it differently. For the 1st 3 days I had clear
liquids, Broth, tea jello, popsikles (all sfree of course) the next week
and a half it was cream of wheat, pudding, protein shakes, cream soups etc.
Then on the third stage it starts with semi solid foods. Thin mashed
potatoes with gravy, tuna with light mayo on crackers, grated cheese,
grilled or baked white fish or shrimp and mashed veggies or veggies cooked
enough that you can puree them. Then you start adding regular foods. I am 3
weeks post op and am just starting to try new foods other then stage three.
I have found the hardest foods to eat are Rice, Pasta and chicken and beef.
If you are smart you will introduce them last. Good Luckf

Day of Surgery - nothing. You can swab your mouth with a wet sponge.
1-2 Day after surgery - clear liquids.
2-3 days after surgery - full liquids.
Week 1-1.5 - full liquids.
Week 2-3 - pureed foods.
Week 4-5 - soft foods.
Week 6+ - basically anything you want and can tolerate.
Of course, this was my surgeon's plan. I know patients with different
surgeons that went 1+ months on full liquids. Every surgeon differs.
Clear liquids - is what it is - anything you SEE through. Apple juice.
Broth. Water and not much else.
Full liquids - above and cream soup, pudding, jello, yogart, applesauce,
fruit juices, etc. Again, check with your surgeon. And everything is SUGAR
FREE!
Pureed - soup in a blender. anything you can blend to applesauce
consistency and tolerate eating it. It's the yuckiest stage.
Soft Foods - cottage cheese, tuna, shrimp cocktail, strawberries, melon,
fish (mashed), mashed potatoes, meatballs (mashed) basically anything you
can easily mash with a fork.
Then you progress to what you can eat/tolerate within a ratio. For every
100 calories, no more than 3 grams fat and no more than 6 grams of sugar.
Eat 3 bites of protein to every veggie/fruit/carb.
Hope that helps.

Sorry to say that I have not yet had WLS so cannot comment. But I was
wondering (and I think this might be the poster's question) if people might
be willing to share what an average day of food take is once you are past
the post-op stage. What are you eating at the 1 - 2 year point?
Thanks.
