I was 23 when I had the RNY surgery. I weighed 369 pounds and was on 14
pills a day. The surgery changed my life. I lost 216 pounds and couldn't
be happier. I am now 27, I am married, I have a baby and another on the
way! Life is full and rewarding. I could not have done it without God
leading me to have this life altering surgery!!! If you have questions you
can send me a message and I will be happy to help you!!!

I've had the RNy done 10 months ago. I weighed 244 pounds and wearing a
size 20. I now weigh 156 and wear a size 8. With this procedure you can not
eat and drink at the same time. So I will suggest to you is to start
practiceing now. This was the hardest thing for me to get use to. I have no
complications with this procedure. Yes, you are going to have to chane all
of your habits. If you really want this you will make the sacrifices. I
would do it all over again if I have to. It has changed my life for the
better. As long as you have GOD by your side and ask him to guide you
spiritually there is nothing you can not accomplish. GOOD LUCK
P.S. If you have any more question feel free to contact me anytime.

Hi, I had RNY 10 weeks ago, was 271, and now 216, lost 55 pounds, at the
beginning was hard, only broths and the hardest part was the protein (for
me was harder) i didn't tolerate the flavors, asked for opinions and now
I'm good with it. One of the instructions its not to drink liquids when
eating (nor before and after about half hour0 because the space for food
its small and you need to eat to be nourished. At the beggining was hard
but you can do it, if you chew everything very good. At this time when I
eat use to drink a few sips of water and doesn't have any problem. God
Bless you.

This is going to be a personal choice. I am 1 year out today and I am down
174lbs. I made my choice after an informational meeting and doing some
research on the net. My problem with Lap-Band is you have more of a chance
to cheat. You can still take in liquid calories. With my RNY, because of
the removal of intestine, I can not tolerate sugar. I thought that would
really suck but it has actually saved me from trying to cheat. Not everyone
has the sugar intolerance but I like the fact that I do. My husband had the
Lap-Band done in May and he is down 68lbs. He is glad he did it but he does
fight the cheating thing and wishes the weight would come off faster.
Please feel free to contact me if you want to talk more.

Hi - I am having RNY in October (don't know much about band). Regardless,
your stomach is going to be MUCH MUCH smaller, and you will not be able to
eat much. I'm 30, and I did ask my RNY nutristionist the same question (I
like my wine now and again!!). In the beginning, drinking will be out,
becuase you will need to concentrate on getting enough protein and water.
After a year (give or take), you may be able to have a drink occasionally.
Feel free to email me directly if you have more questions! I also suggest
picking up a copy of WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY FOR DUMMIES. It is a VERY
informative book and well worth the $10!! Good Luck!!

There is an "essay" on the Web called "Pouch Rules for
Dummies". It can be found at several different places; here's one of
'em: <http://www.gastricbypassfamily.com/PouchRules.html>. I don't
follow these rules to the letter all the time, e,g,. I HAVE drunk
water/wine with a meal, especially when eating out with friends and family.
I HAVE lost considerable weight, however, because I generally stick with
the "Pouch Rules". These rules written are for RNY, not Lap Band
people. So, can you drink while you eat with RNY? Yes, but you'll have
greater (more rapid) success if you don't.

I was advised not to eat while drinking or drink while eating. Also,
post-surtery, alcohol will probably affect you differently.

In my opinion, Laproscopic RNY was the best choice for me. Yes, you have to
change your lifestyle (the way you think, act, deal with food and drink),
but the results are unsurpassed in my eyes. I am just over 6 months out
(2/15/07 surgery date at 286lbs - today 174lbs, under my goal of 180 and
still losing). I am very happy with my decision. It was hard in the
beginning but what worth having, isn't? Once you get over the 3 week after
surgery hump things really start to show, you start to feel better and
start to get your energy back. It's major surgery and of course things can
go wrong and comlications can arise. All I am saying, if I had to do it
again, I would and I would choose RNY again and again. Good luck with your
decision.

I was told not to drink for 1 hour after eating meals. By doing this you
are keeping your pouch full longer and you will not be hungry. It really
does work at least for me it has. I set the timer for 1 hour after I have
eaten and then start on the water again when it goes off. I hope this has
helped.

RNY was the best decision for me! No, you can't drink with your meals. I
was told to wait for 30 mins after and don't drink 30 mins prior to eating.
Each surgeon is different. I am 5 months post op today and still have a
long way to go, however, I've lost 88.5 lbs so far. I'm shooting for 100
lbs by 6 months. Think of it this way-- do you want a foreign body inside
of you with a port that is "open" on the outside of you? I've
heard nothing but complaints about the lap band and so many asking for a
revision to have the RNY done. You also need to consider how much weight
you have to lose and how fast you want it off. RNY takes the pounds off
quickly (provided you follow surgeon's orders), and lap band goes much much
slower and often stands still. Good luck and God Bless!

Hi.I`m only as far as having a consult scheduled for Oct.5th.I am having
the RNY.I started out dead set on the lapband, but after a whole lot of
problems with Doctors not accepting IL.Medicaid I started looking at the
RNY.And after concidering the differences I decided to go with the RNY
because 1.Doctors accept medicaid for the procedure more.2.I`ve heard a lot
that the weight loss is faster & 3.I don`t have to keep going back for
fills seein my surgeon is a 3-4 hour train ride away. But I`ve read up on
these surgeries and everything I`ve heard from my research and other OH
members says it`s best if you DO NOT eat while you drink or drink while
you eat because liquids flush the food out quicker and makes you hungry
more. And in some people it can make them sick enough to wish to God they
hadn`t and pray to God to make it stop & they won`t ever do that
again!!! LOL.I absolutely will not tempt fate.I`d rather have a tooth
pulled than to throw up or have any stomach pain so I know I`ll do
everything I`m suppose to do to keep that from happening.Good luck on your
weight loss journey.

Hi, My name is Yvette and I had the RNY on 4/3/07, I have lost 83pounds so
far and I am only 4months out. Just like you I had wanted the Lapband but
after going to meetings and speaking to patients that had the surgery I
changed my mind for RNY. RNY was much better for me and you lose the weight
faster. But thats a decision you have to make. You can not eat and drink at
the same time. I started practicing before the operation and that helped me
alot. If you have or need any more info just write me.
GOOD LUCK

Hi! Bridgette, make sure you are an informed consumer. There are other
choices beside the band and the RNY. Please check out the DS forum. You
can eat and drink at the same time with a DS, plus there are other pros to
the surgery over the others. Good luck in your research, Nancy

After researching the Lap Band extensively and the Roux en Y, I chose the
RNY. I didn't like the idea of having a needle used to inject saline every
couple months to adjust the band. Plus I heard you can cheat the band, by
flushing your little stomach with water. You have to wait at least 1/2 hr
to drink after eating w/a RNy, but you get used to it. I had my RNY on
6/5/07 and have lost 45 lbs. No complications, easy recovery and no needle
injections to adjust a band. I highly recommend it, but it's a personal
decision, do your research and be an informed consumer. Feel free to write
or check out my story. Best Wishes!

As someone else said, DEFINITELY CHECK OUT THE DS FORUM. To me, it sounds
like the way to go. i am seeking a revision from RnY to a DS. Wish I had
done the DS originally. My bad.
