Question:
Had op 10-05-05 still cannot eat meats (chicken, tune or beef) only soft foods

I get a pain in my chest and then have to vomit. I've cut it up in to less then 1mm tiny tiny then chewed 45 times and the mush still comes up. Has this happened to you? And my loss is minimal - 60 in 2 1/2 months    — carmenica (posted on December 9, 2005)

Your weight loss is fantastic. I am 4 months post op and have lost 75lbs. Also, try putting your meats in a food processor first and see how that works. It took me a little to find meat that I could eat. I had a hard time keeping it down as well and was running to the bathroom every time I ate it. If the food processor doesn't work, call your doctor just to be on the safe side.

This could just be losing pains sort to speak. Do you take a prescription med for GERD? Even though the Dr. took me off mine 6 wks after surgery I had to go back on it cause my esophogus (sp) kept spasing and I would throw my meat especially chicken right up. I immediatlly reconized the signs, especially the pain in the middle in my chest, as spasms, and started my meds, it went away, right away. It could be other things to, so if it doesnt get corrected call your Dr, because you wont lose weight if you cant eat protien, oh and your hair may fall out more than normal. Good luck Michelle

I can't recall my parnter trying to eat such foods 2 months after surgery. I'm trying to remembe what she did eat -- although that was 2 years ago. What I do remember is eating foods that didn't agree with her and throwing them back up. Your body is telling you it is not ready for that food again. You have changed my stomach and now you want me to try and eat those same foods all over again. Please take your time, your body is telling you it is not ready. She did a lot of carnation breakfast drinks --things of that nature. She took her time and she looks good and thank God have not had any of the complications I've heard people having on this site. Please people, don't try to rush back into eating what you used to eat -- I thought that was the whole point of the surgery. You loss is not minimal -- I don't call 60 lbs in 2 1/2 months minimal -- that is extraordinary. I don't think she lost that much weight in that time period.

Can't speak to the meat issue because I never had it. Could be you're too soon our or you might have a stricture starting. Best to speak to your doctor either way. Your weight loss is VERY fast. It took me 3 months and a day to lose 50 lbs and I started at 325.

Well, I guess I don't need to say anything about the "minimal" loss do I? LOL You're doing fantastic on your loss....keep it up! How moist are the meats you're trying to eat? If meat is at all dry, I don't keep it down (and I'm 2 years out). Or, it just could be that you need to let your body heal some more. Can you eat cheese? What about chili? Hamburger seems to be easier for me than some other meats. Dried beans? I'd give the meats a rest for a while and then try them again in a few weeks. Carmen

I had surgery 10/3/05. I have lost 50lbs....you've lost more than me!! Anyways, I still don't eat meat much, it just doesnt agree with me! I have tried the buddig turkey and Oscar mayer deli turkey and seem to do okay with it....about 1/2 a slice or so at a time with a chunk of cheese. You might try that! Also, make sure you are eating slow enough, even though it's mush...you need to give each swallow time to go down. Great weight loss....keep it up!

Oh boy, I am almost 6 months out have lost almost 100, and still can not tolerate meats. If its bothering you that bad, try to soak chicken, preferably dark meat in chicken stock or broth over night then cook it and try it...it works somewhat better...it is goin to take time, it hurts alot, so maybe try tofu, or crabmeat to get some protein in. Thats what I live on, and my hair is still falling out profusely. Best of Luck, Tara

I am 4 months out and just hitting 60 lbs. so in my opinion you are doing excellent in that regard. I too have issues with meat. I tend to only have a bite or two that is very tender and chew like crazy. It is slowly getting easier the only thing that I haven't been able to eat is chicken no matter how I cook or eat it. I try something and see how much trouble I have and then try a few weeks later which gives my pouch time to continue to heal. I eat alot of cheese, milk, yogurt, and other milk products. I still drink protein drinks quite a bit. My hair loss is slowing but not returning as quick as I would like.

WOW! You are doing great on your weightloss! I think everyone is different. I have not had my surgery yet...hoping for Feb...but my sister had hers about 9 months ago...she can eat about anything she wants, but in very small amounts. In the beginning, it was very slow. A lot of cheeses, and cottage chesse for her. I also have a very good friend that had it done about a year and a half ago, and she had a lot of problems. She ate #1 baby foods for at least 9 months to a year. She was very sick for a long while, and lost lots of hair, but she is 1/3 of the person she use to be now, and is pregnant with her first baby! Just take your time, and if you feel like something is not normal for YOU, then ask your doctor. You're doing a great job!!! Sandra

I had the same thing after surgery, and I still cannot eat chicken or some beef and I am a year out! I can eat prok, ground beef, and I find that lobster and shrimp go down easiest. I buy lobster salad at Wegmans and it ltakes me a week to eat a quarter pound. Try eating different things and see what you can tolerate. Also do not eat when you feel full. I still have to wait at least an hour after a "meal" to drink anything and an hour after drinking anything to eat!

Hi, I am going on 5 years post op, and I still have difficulty with meats, chicken, etc. If I don't grind them up forget it. They get stuck, and stuck for days, and I wind up having to vomit them up to start eating again. Not something I bargained for, but I hate baby food, so rarely do I eat meats. If I need protein I drink it.
