Question:
IS WHEY OR SOY PROTEIN DRINKS BETTER FOR SOMEONE 1.5 YEARS POST OP?

I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE WHEY AND SOY AND IF THERE REALLY IS ONE BETTER FOR US THAN THE OTHER. ALSO, ANYONE TRIED THE WOMEN'S ULTRA TIME RELEASE VITAMINS FROM GNC? I'VE JUST STARTED WORKING OUT (LIFTING WEIGHTS) I'M TIRED ALL THE TIME AND I DO GET MY B12 INJECTIONS MONTHLY PLUS TAKE THE ORAL. WHAT TYPE OF IRON AM I SUPPOSE TO TAKE? I'VE BEEN TAKING 3 325MG IRON SULFATE PILLS PER DAY SINCE SURGERY BUT I'M BRUISING SOOOOO BAD. THANKS AND SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!    — JOY C. (posted on January 16, 2004)

Whey protein isolate is the purest form and best absorbed of the proteins so look for that. Soy does not absorb as well. If your tired all the time, have you had labs taken lately to see if there is a medical reason for it? are you drinking enough water? Dehydration can make you tired...

In bioavailability, whey is #1 with soy being about #10. Animal proteins are more effective than vegetable proteins, over all. In the same way that organic irons are better absorbed than non-organic. The fe sulfate is the least well absorbed iron, as far as I know. Although fe gluconate & fumarate are listed as good ones, I've gotten better results with carbonyl or polysacharride irons. Iron is always taken with C, not with dairy or caffeine, other vitamins, minerals or meds, alone together for at least an hour.

Here's a third vote for whey protein over soy. I'd also get my labs run, if I were you, to see if anything indicates why you're so tired. As far as time-released vitamins are concerned -- time-released medications aren't a particularly good choice for RNY patients, as they're designed to be "time-released" along a full intestinal path and we don't have one anymore (it's like an interstate with some of the exits missing ... how will you know which vitamins didn't exit where they were supposed to in order to work?). I can't see what the point of time-released multivitamins would be in any case ... good luck with the weightlifting! (Are you doing a protein shake after you work out?)
