Question:
I have a surgery date.
My surgery (lap RNY) date is October 6, 2008 at 3:30 pm. I am very excited but also very nervous. How long is the hospital stay and since my surgery is so late in the afternoon, will I be getting up to walk at midnight or later? — MadameSiewe (posted on September 13, 2008)

My surgery was later in the day and yes they did get me walking about
midnite or so. I was in the hospital for four days, but each Dr says how
long you we be in. I had my surgery last Oct. Good luck and God bless.

I had a open ERNY and my doctor keeps you overnight in the hospital. If you
have alot of pain you might get to stay 1 extra night.

I had lap RNY Aug 20, 2008 stayed three nights in the hospital. My surgery
was 7am . They only had me stand up that night and walk in place due to my
oxygen being low. My starting weight was 264 and I am 235 now.

Hello, Pamela. Congrats on getting your date, first of all. I want to tell
you a few things that may ease your mind. My surgery only took a few hours,
and my surgeon was so experienced, he could do them in his sleep. When I
awoke, the pain was manageable. I had the LAP RNY, and it was not real pain
exactly, more like I had done 100 sit-ups. Kind of like a sore muscle. I
must say, the gas was the biggest issue, and it can crop up in weird areas,
like your shoulder and neck. However, this is totally normal and is
alleviated by walking. I was in the hospital for two days, and they sent me
home with liquid pain medication, but I never needed it. Everyone is
different of course, but I have every confidence that you will emerge from
this totally able to manage your pain. If you need an ear or get nervous
before surgery, we are no further than one click away. Keep us posted, and
very best wishes to you! -Pam

My surgery was 7-22-08 in the a.m. and I was in the hospital just
overnight. The nurses didn't get up to walk... I did, about an hour or 2
after returning from the recovery room. The gas from surgery settled in my
chest and walking was the only thing to relieve it. So I walked and walked.
Glad to say that by the time I went home (the next day) I had very little
problems with the gas.
I had very little pain in my stomach from the surgery... it was more in my
intestines... which I wasn't expecting. So just be aware that the
discomfort can show up anywhere during recovery. They gave me liquid pain
meds & liquid nausea med, which I did take some of each, (still have
more than 1/2 bottle of each left). Liquid Tylenol is the thing to take...
no side effects!
Hope this helps!

I have been told by my nursing staf that my stay will be 3 to 4 day
depending on how well I do. As for the walking, I'm not sure when they will
have you up walking, I feel that will depend on how you are doing also plus
if you are sleeping, but that again, sleep never stop's a hospital staff
from anything. lol God Luck and GOD BLESS

I had lap RNY on 8/27/08. I was wheeled into the surgery room at 7am.
They told me surgery would be about 2.5 hours. I was into my hospital room
at 12:15pm, and at 4pm they had me up in a chair, and at 5pm they had me
walking a lap around my floor. I was discharged the following day at
3:30pm.
I'm only 18 days out and have already lost 22 pounds!
Good Luck!!
