Question:
Does anyone know the amount of Fat intake we should be concerned about?
I am aware of the amount of protein we should be take in and the carb intake but how much fat is a safe amount per serving? — dawnraad (posted on February 28, 2008)

Every surgeon is different, but my rule of thumb is:
for every 100 calories, no more than 6grams of sugar and 3grams of fat.
Good luck.

I try to keep my fat intake to less than 30% (less than 20% would be ideal)
of my total caloric intake. I use www.fitday.com, which provides that
information for me.

Fat shouldn't really be something you need to worry about terribly...but
eating healthy oils and lower fats are always better for you than globs of
butter and animal fats. Eat lean and you'll be fine. But don't cut out all
your oils and fats...You need them to carry vitamins and minerals through
your blood and you body doesn't absorb all of the fats any more.

I get sick on almost any fat. I can not even have a regular steak, so I
eat only the best cuts of beef & pork tenderloin and well trimmed Rack
of Lamb. Chicken I remove all the skin, eat only baked and never eat any
of the fat. No bacon or anything with any fat showing. Can't take any
fried foods, but I use a little olive Oil on a small salad with vingier.
Oil from nuts does not bother me, but I only eat a few at a time. Have not
tried Peanut Butter because of the oil, and I use mainly fat free or 1% or
2% fat dairy products. Everyone is different and your doctor can better
guide you in what he finds works best the way he does his surgery.

I malabsorb most fats...you can tell by the oil slick in the toilet. Also,
my labs are great in that area. My bad cholesterol is in the 50's and my
good cholesterol is in the 50s. Total cholesterol is a little over 100.
I'm 8 years out. I eat butter, and I do not avoid fried foods. I don't
crave fried foods nor eat them every day, but I think I could. The only
caveat here is that your cholesterol doesn't really tell the total picture
of your health...so I too, think it's better to stick with the healthy
fats. I wouldn't restrict them though. Regards~

My nutritionist (bariatric dietician) said two teaspoons of olive oil a day
for my WLS eating plan. Wishing you much success!
