Question:
LIQUID DIET after surgery

I had lap band Surgery on 12/11/2007 and my question is how many weeks has everyone else waited before they went off CLEAR liquids and started the liquid diet. I'm so ready to throw the Jello and chicken broth in the trash and eat some soup. thanks    — willish (posted on December 19, 2007)

I only had to do clear liquids for one week and then liquid diet for two weeks and then soft food for 3 weeks and then you are pretty much on your own food wise.

I had gastric bypass surgery, so I dont know if your diet would be a little different or not. The first two weeks I was on a clear liquid diet. I could drink protein shakes, water or flavored water, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello and clear broth such as chicken or beef. Then week 3 and 4 I was on a pureed diet (liquid foods and foods of a smooth soft consistency that require no chewing. Fat free yogurt, sugar free pudding, low fat cream soups, baby food stage 1, low fat cottage cheese, creamy peanut butter, mashed potatoes and unsweetened applesauce. Week 5 and 6 I was on a soft diet. Seafood, canned chicken or slow cooked chicken. soft ham, turkey, ground hamburger, eggs, peanut butter or cheese. I wasnt able to eat things like steak, porkchop, salad, raw vegetables or fruit, rice or bread until 6 months after surgery because it could cause blockage. Like I said it could be different for you since you had the lap band. You might want to ask your doctor. Good luck.

i was on liquids the 1st week after banding. I saw the surgeon the next week and went to soft foods that where either well pureed or very well chewed. I think each surgeon has a different idea and depending on each patient can modify the diet. I have a friend who was on liquids for the 1st 3 days then went right to soft foods.

Congratulations on your surgery! I had lapband on 11-09 and I stuck with broths and protein drinks for a week. But yogurt was on my list, also v-8 juice and something I did was make beans and rice like a jambalaya and blended it in the blender..a perfect protein.. It was so good. Not sure if it was ok but got me thru wanting something good.. hope this helps. I had to do liquids 4 weeks..It seemed to last forever but hang in there

I too was fed up with the diet restriction timeline of course I had pizza 2 weeks post RNY so I totally deserved the power vomiting I had that evening. I also learned to tell the doctors and dieticians what they wanted to hear and just take my time and slowly advance my diet to the next level when my body felt like it could handle it and back it down if it couldn't handle it. Congrats. Good Luck with your surgery.

I had band on 5/24/07... I was sent home on FULL liquids, not clear liquids, so I was only on clear liquids for 24 hours after surgery. Are you sure you're not confusing the doctor's orders? You might want to call your nutritionist to confirm what you should be doing...

I just had lapband surgery on Dec. 18. My nut had me on clear liquids in the hospital only and then on full liquids as soon as I came home. I have to be on them for two weeks and then start of pureed. I've seen so many variations that I'm not sure there is a "right" one, just whatever your doctor and nut decide they want for their patients. Hope this helps.

Congratulations on your surgery! I was banded on 10/17/07. I was on clear liquids in the hospital (24 hours) and came home with 3 weeks of liquids...protein drinks, protein shakes made with lowfat milk, suger free popsicles, jello, chicken, beef and veggie broth, and such. While there is alot of debate about how the protein drinks taste...if you experiment enough you will find some that you like! I personally fell in love with the Whey Gourmet "Ice Cream" flavors from Bariatriceating.com...I still have a shake a day to supplement my protein, probably more becuase I like the taste! My Dr. suggested I use lowfat milk, it added to the flavor! By the end of 2.5 weeks, I was so very ready to move on to pureed foods, I started a little early with the cream soups...Good luck!

You should talk to your surgeon and follow his/her instructions. My surgeon kept me on clear liquids (exception being protein shakes were allowed) for 30 days. Since I have had total success with my band, I do believe in my surgeon's post-surgical treatment. Dr. Srikanth posts some of the highest success rates in the nation, so what he does works. That said, different surgeons have different philosophies, and you should follow your surgeon's advice.

I had lap band on 12-4-07. My surgeon requires two weeks of clear liquids, two weeks of full liquids (includes pudding, yogurt, etc) and two weeks of soft foods. Try cooking ramen noodles and getting rid of the noodles. The broth tastes way better than plain chicken broth.

I agree to what Vickie said. All surgeons does it differently. I was on s/f popsicles and diluted cranberry juice for 10 days after my band on Oct 11th. After that I went to full liquids for 2 weeks along with protein drinks. I contribute my post op diet a success to my weight loss of 40lbs since Oct 11th. I've heard some people say they go straight to mushies after 2wks. That was a NO NO with my surgeon. Hang in there with the clear liquids and wait until you see the results. You'll be glad you did. I sure am. Good luck

I just had lap band surgery on 12-19 and I'm alittle afraid. I feel good. I'm not shaky or puk-ee. I am hungry and want to eat food but I won't for a couple of weeks. I don't know anyone who had this and I don't know how I'm supposed to feel. Antone want to talk?

Just and updated answer to this question for any who may browse across as I did. My dr. gave guidelines of totally clear liquids for 2 weeks with the exception of skim milk. At that point I see the Nut and advance on....
