I don't mean to rub it in, but my husband and I both had surgery 3 three years ago, and we didn't have to fast at all. It was just like any other surgery, our dr. said no food or liquids after midnight. We did have to drink that stuff that cleans out you out the day before. That was not the greatest.

About 1-1/2 weeks before my RNY procedure, I received a call from a the dietitian on my bariactric team and found out I had to be on a clear liquid diet for one week prior to surgery. The day before that week began, I went to Jack-In-The-Box and enjoyed my last Ultimate Cheeseburger. I savored it royally because I thought that would be my last taste of the absolute BEST burger served by any fast food restaurant anywhere. (Sorry McDonald's -- your fare does not come close.) The week of clear liquids (I WAS allowed saltine crackers -- in moderation) went like a breeze. In fact I have resolved that the next time I have a major (i.e., with general anesthesia) elective surgery scheduled, I am going to impose the pre-surgery week of clear liquids on myself, whether it has to do with abdominal surgery or not. Of course a bariatric surgeon wants your alimentary canal as clean as possible for his/her work but I think the clean alimentary tract makes the anesthesiologist's job easier as well. Don't forget that you'll be on clear liquids for a period after surgery too -- this has always been the case, for me at least, after any major surgery I've had in the past. Whatever you do, please follow your dietary instructions, both pre- and post-surgery, to the letter. I read in these OH messages that some people like to "experiment" and exceed the bounds of they are instructed to eat and not eat. In this case, "experiment" is another word for "cheat" and the only person you are cheating by such experimentation is yourself. Good luck and Happy New Year!!

My docotor did not put me on a liquid diet. He put me on a low carb diet for two weeks. He said eating 40 grams of carbs or less a day for two weeks helps shrink my liver. He said that will help when I have my surgery. I know its hard now, but look at the award you will get. Good Luck.

We used a two week low-fat diet immediately prior to surgery (because your liver helps in processing fats, it is important to restrict fats to shrink your liver so that it can be retracted during surgery). For 48 hours before surgery, I was on clear liquids (we tend to process everything in about that time, so my surgeon believes that inflicting a much longer clear liquid phases is neither necessary nor kind to do to people who will be forced to make life-time changes in their use of food post-operatively). For me, when I was adhering to the low fat, and then to the clear liquids, I did question why I couldn't have found that same resolve all those times when I would start a diet with the best of intentions and then fail. A counsellor pointed out how different it is being a diet that you know will be of very short duration and for which the cost of failure is very significant and immediate (needing to have an open procedure if your liver is supple enough to be retracted during laparoscopic surgery).

Hi Vanessa ! I am 3 days post-op and was on the clear liquid diet for 7 days before surgery. I actually lost 13 lbs. in that time and my surgeon was very happy. Just make sure you keep yourself hydrated ! Good Luck ! Trish :<)

My surgery isn't until 2-16-06, but I have to fast on a liquid diet for two-weeks pre-op, so 1 week seems manageable. Good Luck!

Hi, all doctors have different requirements before surgery. I was on a liquid diet for 3 1/2 weeks before surgery. One week sound like nothing. If you're exitied about having the surgery it should be no problem to stay on the pre-surgery diet. Dan

I had to do a liquid diet for 10 days - it was not that bad. And I had to do the liquid diet over my birthday!!! But I did not eat one crumb of food. By fasting you are shriking your liver and getting fatty deposits off you rliver as well. And this will help during surgery because your liver will not be "in the way" during surgery. GOod luck in your journey!! By the way, I had my surgery exactly one year ago today and I am SO glad I did it!
