It will vary depending on how far postop you are. At first my plan limited
me to 8 oz of protein drink and I had to drink it over 1/2 hour or so, slow
sips. Now 6 weeks postop I can have a larger portion such as 12 oz if I
want and I can drink it in 20-30 minutes. Your pouch is inflamed right
after surgery and cannot handle as much. But this swelling goes down over
the weeks after, and it can handle more. You really cant
"guzzle" though!! After some exercise I really wanted to drink
down a big glass of water and I couldn't-- had to drink it in smaller
swallows LOL. A dietician met with me daily in the hospital and has been
available daily since if I needed to ask questions so be sure to use these
resources!
Good luck-- Valerie Z

Depending upon how thick you mix your protein shakes, and how much fiber
content is included in them, it might take you about 30 minutes to sip your
protein drinks. It is then a challenge to try to figure out how thick you
can make them so that you can drink them a little more quickly without
making them so dense as to make you uncomfortable.
An easy solution is to try to find ISOPURE ZERO CARB, which is a clear
high-protein drink with no carbs; these you could sip a little bit faster.
Just remember that all these little rules about sipping slowly help to heal
your pouch and also aid in unlearning years of bad habits where many of us
ate and drank much too quickly and unconsciously.
Good luck.

Hi Bill, I'm Pre op to mine is on 4/12 and My Dr. told me to use the Boost
for the first two weeks and only drink 2oz every 3 hrs. That will be good
because they have screw on tops, so it will only take 1 a day for me to
start with, then after the 2nd. week to strt increasing it. But since every
Dr. and Nutritionist is different, I'd check with them. Cause we all need
to follow our Dr's orders.
Take Care, and good luck!!

My Dr. recommended the Boost also but be careful with the milky boost
drinks ,gave me horrible gas and made me want to throw up but they do have
a punch like boost .that is what I drank it was so refreshing after not
being able to drink anything for the first day or so. Your protein
shakes(the ones you make later on) need to be drank in 1/2 hour or less
with them being whey protein they are predigested, which makes them go bad
faster.Good luck it is truely an awesome journey

We mix protein drink sto taste . . . but start with 4 oz water, a few ice
cubes.
Even a newby ought to be able to drink that in 15 min.
You drink as fast as you are comfortable with. I use straws, and could
drink pretty fast, right from start.
Gulping hurts, but steady "guzzle" is fine . . .

Hi there...I am very surprised that no one else on this site mentioned
making half of the drink at a time!! I am close to 2yrs post op now but I
would only make 1/2 of what the directions would say and I would not blend
the ice cubes in the blender. It just made more volume. I would swirl the
ice around in the glass with a spoon to make it a little cold while I
sipped on it. If you make a 12oz drink off the bat you will feel very
intimidated and hopeless that you will never finish it. Plus I never liked
the look of them once they sat too long. I have always used zero carb
isopure and i would make them with 4oz water, 1 scoop of protein and a
splenda. That way it was a very small manageable drink. I wish you the best
of luck on this wild ride you are about to come upon. I would do it all
again in a minute. Take care,
Julie

Hi ! I'm 9 days post op and my nutritionist and surgeon gave me this
schedule to follow while on the full liquid diet:
7:00 am- 1/2 C thinned cooked cereal, like cream of wheat
10:00 am- 1/2 C High Protein Shake with fruit (blenderized)
12:00 noon-1/2 C Blenderized soup with added lean meat
2:00 pm-1/2 C High Protein shake with fruit
4:00 pm-1/2 C High Protein shake with fruit
6:00 pm-1/2 C Blenderized soup with added lean meat
8:00 pm-1/2 C High Protein shake with fruit
So, what I do, is make my 12 oz shake in the morning and store it in a
little jug in the fridge; when it's time for my 1/2 oz portion, I just pour
it out and drink it. In between I make sure I drink at least one 20 oz
water bottle of water or eat some Sugar Free popsicles. It's not that
difficult. But of course your surgeon and nutritionist may have a similar
plan laid out for you after your surgery. It's much easier when you have a
schedule layed out for you, at least it is for me...I've never been one for
schedules but that may be MY reason for being obese and now it's time for a
change.
Good luck to you and I hope this helps a little!!

I'm wondering which protein and how do you make it up? I can get 30g
protein, less than 4g sugar in about 4 oz of water. I PREFER more like 8
oz, but I'm nearly 12 yrs out. You might want to pop over to the protein
list and see if you can make this more manageable.
