Question:
Protein.. Has anyone lost weight quickly without taking any extra?

I had my surgery on Oct 3 and have lost almost 50lbs.. My doctor does not recommend any extra protein and all his patients have lost weight... My problem is I had thyroid cancer so I was told my weight loss would be slow anyway.. I just need to know if I should be too concerned with taking any extra? I eat high protien foods anyway so I get between 35 and 50 grams a day and I workout at the gym and I drink all my water, I just cannot stand the protein drinks or the bars.    — thelindersmom (posted on November 22, 2005)

Hi Nicole - I asked my nutritionist what was the lowest I should go with the protein. She said 40 grams. I asked her what too high would be. She said 200 grams. My doctor's office is happy with 60 grams per day. My interpretation during all of my conversations with her is "the more, the better". I usually get between 65-85 grams per day..average. I do know that if you're working out at the gym, you should be taking in more protein so you can replace what you are using. I had surgery on 9-20-05 and have lost 36 lbs. to date. The more weight you have to lose going into surgery, the more quickly it will come off at first.

The issue isn't weight loss, it's your health. I don't usually supplement, but I eat alot of protein and occasionally supplement if I'm low for the day.

From what I understand the protein is not only for the weight loss but your overall health --during rapid weight loss and it is also to help with hair loss... -- I was informed the more the better -- I was told to get at least 75 - 100 grams per day -- But every surgeon is different -- I hope this helps..

It's not a matter of losing weight or not, it's a matter of losing muscle, including your most important muscle, your heart. And protein is the fuel used to burn fat. More absorbable protein (pre-digested whey protein shakes) = better, more sustainable weight loss. The majority of the most successful post-ops I know use protein shakes to equal 90+ grams of protein per day. (That's 3 - 30 grams of protein shakes.)

I think you are right on with your weight loss. I only lost 70 pounds in a 6 month time period and 3 years later am still only at the 70/75 pound loss. I am told it is normal each person loss is differant.

Have you tried the protein shake "profect" ?? Copied and pasted from their web site, "A single, 2.7-ounce vial of Profect provides 50% of the U.S. R.D.I. for protein, as well as the complete spectrum of water-soluble vitamins. This protein-to-volume ratio exceeds the needs of bariatric patients. Profect also provides exceptional taste and texture, and 100% of the protein is pre-digested via enzymatic hydrolyses, thereby increasing absorption/assimilation" If you don't like protein shakes, try this. It's got 25 grams of protein in just a 2.7 oz vile, which you can throw in your purse, and drink in just a few sips. Done! :)

My take on protein intake... I know I don't get enough in yet and am trying very hard to get more in. The problem for me was my choice for protein shakes. The first one I tried was nasty!! But there are others that are actually really good. I am supposed to get in at least 76g of protein a day. This was based on my height. The protein is important for hair retention, musle retention, and especially wound healing. Proteins are the building blocks for our whole body. (Sounds like biology class!) LOL, but seriously, it is really important to get some in. There are tons of supplements, and variety is the key. I like the Isopure zero carb premixed protein drinks. They are sweet, almost like a Kool Aide, and each 20oz bottle has 40g of protein. I drink one of those a day and a shake or two and I'm doing alright. There are others that I heard are good too, Any Whey I heard is great and completely tasteless and not gritty. You can use it in food as well as in beverages. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
