I haven't had my op yet, but dealing with type 2 diabtes for the last 2 years my doc said to stop eating sugar (as a primary ingredient) and it has done wonders for me - it was tough - to be sure - but the results are truly amazing. There are enough foods out there that naturally convert to sugar to ensure your body a sufficient supply. By cutting out all - and I mean all - foods prepared commercially that have sugar listed within the first 4-6 ingredients on the label has been a godsend. No more cravings, no more 'gotta have' rages. So what do I do for sweets? Splenda, and lots of sugar free or artificially sweetend products, (I won't get into the whole art. sweet debate here) I'm human, I like sweets, I just don't want (can't have) sugar. And yes, if you eat too much of certain art. sweetened products, you system will let you know, almost immediately! Remember, they're not calorie free, just sugar free. I no longer get colds like I used to, I can get my heart rate way up there on my exercising, and I just love the look on peoples faces as they dig in on that 4 layer chocolate mocha suprise. My heart is saying 'go for it' but my soul and mind are saying, hold up, you can have a s/f bite when you get home. It makes them feel oh so guilty after a while. (smile)

My nutritionist said to try not to go over 10 gms at one time...like if I want cookies I try to find some that have less than 10 gms per serving... for instance I can have 8 vanill wafers for 9gms of sugar. I can't eat 8 ccokies at once so I know I am staying under my 10 gms. I am 11 months out from open RNY and I have never dumped because I follow this rule faithfully!

My dietician told me to avoid anything that had sugar listed in the first 5 ingredients.

My surgeon said I may have up to a maximum of 14 grams of sugar per serving. That was not in the beginning, but once I was 5 months out.

I can handle 17 to 23 grams at a time. Guess I'm not a dumper, huh? This can be good and it can be bad. Good thing I am not a big sweet eater.
