Question:
Protein

How do you get the protein drinks without it hurting your pouch and cramps when you can't do shakes because of gagging?    — ladyrdhk (posted on February 14, 2010)

When did you have your surgery, I gagged with some of the protein shakes, I use Max Protein from GNC, I thank the good Lord, I no longer have a problem with protein shakes. The junk they gace you in the hospital made me hurl. I have a big problem with meat protein still, and I am out six months. So I must rely on my shakes for supplementation.

Have you tried Isopure no carb? It is more like koolaid. Also, Unjury makes chicken soup flavored and unflavored protein. Adding sugar free syrup (the kind used in flovored coffee) may help. Look at eggface.com for some protein drink recipes. If you dissolve the protin with liquid before adding hot liquid, you can make decaffinated coffee drinks with protein powder, unsweetened cocoa and sugar-free syrup. I also tried mixing just half a scoop of the protein powder in milk. Then I drank two glasses of it. Milk has aound 8 grams of protein. You can purchase samples of protein powders from vitalady.com. I had to drink in little sips or I would get cramps but that wasn't from gagging.

Girl i feel your pain.... i have not done any shakes, they make me cringe. I did protein shots, walmart carries them as well as the vitamin shoppe, isopure isnt the best but way better than the shakes.. there is a website bariatric eating.com they have alot of different things to try. you can even make popsicles out of the isopure. good luck

I was afraid of the "hurling" problem myself, so I decided to invest in some really delicious protein. We had a protein taste-test night at our support group, and believe me, not all protein drinks are created equal. I second the recommendation for Max Protein (delicious and good numbers on carbs & sugar) and on the website "world according to eggface" as she has a great bunch of ideas for making delicious shakes. I have found I really like the Believe protein drinks from BariatricEating.com... they make a mocha latte, an Italian Cappucino, and a soothing Chai Tea. They come in glass bottles and have great numbers... 120 calories, 20g protein, 5g carbs, plus a bunch of vitamins. they're not cheap, but since I'm not buying much food these days, I've justified buying these drinks that I actually like that are good for me. the consistency and taste are similar to the "frappacino" drinks in glass bottles.
