Well, I had to have a pulmonary function workup, an EGD (where they put a
tube down your throat to take a look at your stomach - and I made them put
me out for it!), and a cardiology workup including stress test and
echocardiogram. My surgeon also orders sleep study tests for virtually all
of his patients. I don't know how I escaped it, unless it's because I told
him I didn't snore and didn't have any symptoms of sleep apnea. But these
tests are all pretty painless, and it's good to have all this information
before you go into a major surgery like this. You don't want anything
going wrong. If your surgeon DOESN'T order these tests, I'd be really
worried.

After the psych work up, I had about two hours with the exercise
department, then about an hour with dietary department after all that was
done I had to sit thru a full day class on why we eat what we do and when
we eat.

Hi Cenia, I think it really depends on your doctor's pre-exam as to what
tests you will have. For example, my doctor detected a heart murmur which
I had never been diagnosed with before so she requested and EKG and a
follow-up appointment with a cardiologist just to make sure everything was
ok. I didn't have a stress test but I did have an sonogram of my heart
which was sufficient to take me off of the "high risk" surgical
list and release me for surgery. Then it was suggested that I have a
colonoscopy. This was not necessary for gastric bypass but because of my
age it was a suggestion from my doctor for my health's benefit. So it will
probably really depend on you doctor's pre-exam as to what other tests
you'll need. Good luck with your surgery!!
