Question:
I have Kaiser (San Diego) and just got my PCP to refer me to the bariatric program.
I've heard it's tough to get WLS through Kaiser (I'm hoping for RNY). Is there anyone out there who's gone through this and can help me prepare to "do battle" with Kaiser, if necessary? What can I expect? Thanks! — Tammi G. (posted on July 18, 2009)

I had RNY on June 11th through Kaiser (Fontana) - but surgery through
Pacific Bariatric at Scripps Mercy. The 6 months of classes are long, but
worthwhile - and as long as your primary is on your side - it all goes very
smoothly. Once you have your referral and get into the
"Bariatric" classes - just pay attention to all they tell you to
do (labs, etc.) It was a year long process - but I am already off insulin
and down 36lbs. - feel free to ask me anything else and Good Luck!

The toughest part is attending the 24 classes and keeping up with your food
and exercise logs. I just finished the program through Kaiser San Diego a
few weeks ago and I'm already meeting with Pacific Bariatric. There were
times when it seemed like the process was taking forever but it was worth
it. When my class went to orientation at Pacific Bariatric we were
definitely the most informed people there (aside from the surgeons of
course!)
