The gastric bypass where they restructure your stomach and reconnect it to the intestine. It is fairly intensive and causes some malabortion of nutrients from food.

RNY is short for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. If you want more info on this type of weight loss surgery you can check it out on the home page and follow the links there. There are several variations of gastric bypass surgery but this is the most common one. Hope this helps.

It's the abbreviation for Roux-n-y. RNY Gastric bypass surgery. DDS is for Duodenal Switch. Lap RNY or Lap DDS is when it's done laparoscopically rather than an open surgery. Lapband, is for gastric banding done laparascopically. There are many other abbreviations that people use on this website...you'll get the gist once you do a little research. Best wishes....

Roux eN Y is the French name for the Gastric Bypass. It is shortened to RNY here on the boards for convenience. There are several OTHER procedures such as the Lap Band, the Banded Gastroplasty, the Duodenal Switch (also known as the DS) and the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (known as the VSG). There are BANDED versions of some of these procedures which will have the word BANDED in front of them so you MAY see a procedure called the BANDED DS or BANDED Duodenal Switch, but these procedures are NOT common. It is more common to see a Banded RNY or Banded Gastric Bypass than it is to see a Banded DS, but even that is not common. The banded procedures are basically insurance against the failure of the original procedure. If the original procedure does not work, the surgeon fills the band to apply added restriction at a later date instead of having the patient come in for a revision. If you want to know more about the various types of weight loss surgeries available, check out my profile page at: http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/hubarlow/. Look for my post titled "Surgical Comparisons." If you don't see it on the main profile page, look for it in the March 2008 archives. I hope this helps. Hugh
