Question:
Anyone with bowel obstructions after having rny 5+ years ago at BTC (Bariatric Treat
ment Center)/Barix in Wylie, Texas which has closed? I have just gone through several weeks in the hospital with extreme pain, surgery, etc. I sure want to know if others have faced this. I am not going to try and sue I promise. I just want to know how others have coped and if there are others who have had to survive this. Dr Julie Leverton did my original RNY surgery March 2003. Thanks for any guidance in healing from the surgery. — AnninTX (posted on June 26, 2008)

My RNY was 06/15/07, GB removal on 02/15/08 and a double small bowel
resection on 06/14/08. Scar tissue grew around the small bowels in two
places and decided to act up the day before flying out on vacation.
Emergency surgery was done and I'm home now recovering. I guess you can get
bowel obstructions at any point. Good luck in your recovery.

I had surgery on 3/4/08. Formed scar tissue by 3/20/08. Had to have a
revision on 4/1/08. Simply Shit happens. have the revision to remove the
scar tissue and move on. Noting the doctors could have ever done to prevent
this.

A bowel obstruction is a potential risk for anyone who has had prior
abdominal surgery because of scar tissue/adhesions, not necessarily WLS.
My father has had 3 bowel obstructions, 2 in the small bowel, 1 in the
colon as he has had multiple prior intra-abdominal surgeries. 2 had to be
operated on, 1 cleared up after a lengthy hospital stay that was not so
fun. Shit, or lack of it happens... sorry to say for all of our sakes.
A very young lady in our support group had RNY a few years back and is at
goal, has had all of her plastics and is GORGEOUS. Finally able to get
pregnant and have a baby and had a small bowel obstruction just a few weeks
ago with surgical repair.
You never know.
Good luck to you,

i had a strangulated hernia and obstruction april of 2006. it was
excruciating pain that i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy!! to make matter
worse, i first noticed the symptoms when i was 8 months pregnant with my
2nd child and no doc would even look for a possible cause. they all
assumed since i was a bypass patient whose gall bladder went bad. they
wouldn't even do an ultrasound to see. so, they just told me not to eat
since i was in horrible pain 10 mins after eating anything at all. i also
had my surgery at a BTC (in illinois). i also know of another person who
had the surgery from the same clinic that had the same complication. when
my baby was 4 months old, i had the attacks again and refused to leave the
ER until they fixed it. i was vomitting, heaving, and pain pills were
doing nothing. they FINALLY did at CT scan and saw that my intestines were
so swollen that i was on an operating table 15 mins later. they were
worried that at the obstruction, the swelling was about to make my
intesting rupture. thankfully it didn't! my only advice, TAKE IT EASY!!!
best of luck to you!!!

I have just had my second surgery in 3 months. something similiar
intusseption of the bowel. They are finding it to be a late onset
complication greater than 1 year and greater than 100 pound weight loss. I
am a neonatal nurse so intusseption of the bowel is common for our NICU
kiddos but not an adult! I had my first surgery with a manuel manipulation
to the bowel and bowel tacking but still had significant pain. I had my
second surgery on December 26th of 2008, a bowel resection. It was a
laproscopic procedure and I am now home recovering. I have a wonderful
surgeon in Denton, Texas if you are interested. I think there will be alot
of complications with WLS that we will only learn as we all get out a few
more years. I know I was one of the first Lap RNY in the dallas area back
in 2002. so, I think keeping ourselves knowledgable and up-to-date on the
research and follow up are so important. Not just when we are having
problems but when things are going well, too. I hope some of this info
helps you. have a blessed day. Thresa Looney
