Question:
liquid diet
Please give me what is allowed or should be used for the pre-op diet. They switched my pre-op surgery discussion with my dr. to 4 days prior to my surgery, so they didnt give me the diet that they wanted me to be on. I am assuming that it is as it states, all liquids, and sf popsicles, soups, protein shakes. Please let me know what you all did. I dont want to get to that appointment and have them say, "sorry, you have to loose more prior to the surgery". — teresasmiles (posted on January 30, 2008)

I actually spoke to my nutritionist about this today infact. I can have
sugar free popcicles, protein drinks and she suggested the Amy's Organics
Soups. Each soup can will serve as 2 meals. The carbs are low and the
calories. The only thing that isn't low is the price. They are $2-3 dollars
per can.
I have to lose 15 more lbs before I go for my pre-op appt on Feb 19th.
Hope this helps you.

Every Doctor is different as far as pre-op diets are concerned. My sister
had to be on liquids for 5 days pre-op where I only had to be on them for
24-hours pre-op with some pills to clean me out. Neither of us incurred any
problems with surgery or post-op. Please call your doctor's office and ask
them, it is your safest bet. Most doctor's do not mind these calls and have
a staff that will know your answer.
Best of luck to you.

all doctors preop diets are different, you should call and ask--i did not
even have to do a liquid preop diet just high protein, low carb to shrink
my liver prior to surgery. Your safest bet would be to call the office and
ask, you don't want your surgery postponed because you didn't do the right
thing.

Call your Dr. Office and ask him what you need to do. I was on a diet just
to loose 10 lbs before surgery so that I did not have as much fat on the
liver. The liver is over the stomach and it has to be lifted during
surger. Since there is little room getting rid of the fat on the liver is
what you loose first. Then the day before surgery, I went on clear liquids
to flush out my system with the help of a drink, like I was getting ready
for a colenostimy. Stand by the fax in your office and ask them to fax it
to you today.

I also agree - you should caontact your surgeon's office and request a copy
of their preop dietary protocols. Although these diets do have a lot in
common, different surgeons also have differing ideas about how much protein
to take each day (as well as how to get it), if other foods are allowed (my
surgeon requires a 2-week liquid diet but allows one each protein,
vegetable, and fruit daily), etc.
