Question:
Anyone have trouble drinking liquids first thing in the morning?
I am 5 weeks post op and find it very hard to drink liquids in the morning. I usually immediately will throw them up(foamy spit). If I eat a yogurt or apple first then go to the gym and do my workout I can drink just fine. Anyone know why this is happening to me??? — MicheleAD (posted on April 9, 2010)

I'm just over 3 weeks out and I have the same problem - only I haven't
actually thrown up. Taking my meds with a sip of water even make me
nauseated. My psych said that this is pretty common for the first several
weeks. She said some people have the same problem at their last snack time
in the evening/night.

Please don't take this wrong but it doesn't sound like a problem. If you
can't dring first thing in the morning then you can get your protein in
first and you miss the 30 minute void where you are not supposed to drink
prior to eating. The issue might just be reflux. I say my MD yesterday
and he said the lump in my throat was my new reflux and to take a Pepcid AC
before bed. My old reflux was awful this one is just a pain in the butt.
I would try a pepcid or something similar if you find not drinking in the
morning uncomfortable or just adapt and look at the good side of the
situation. 1. you don't lose that 30 minutes of fluid intake 2. you have a
really good incentive to go workout. Just my thoughts. :)

Hi, I'm an rny-er... surgery was on 2/19/10... I have a question for you
that might be part of the problem... Do you have a lot of post sinus drip?
I have had a hard time in the morning because of excess mucus in my pouch.
I have to sip boiling hot water with lemon to help break it up, and spit it
up, even with that I still have trouble during the mornings. The Dr told
me this will lessen as I progress... A Chiropractor friend of mine told me
to elevate the head of the bed about 6-8 inches and it would go away....
with my bed it isn't possible.... maybe with yours it would be. Hope this
helps.

I had the same problem in the begninning. I used my dietician's advice to
sip a small amount of warm liquid which will help cut back on the phlegm
and relax the pouch first thing in the morning. I used a low sodium broth
which usually did the trick.

My doctor said some pouches just don't like to drink so early in the
morning. They are smaller in size as they haven't had anything all night
to "stretch" them out. So as the day progresses, you are able to
consume then you're okay. However, if it doesn't let up, do consult with
your doctor.
