Question:
SHould I have my gall bladder removed with RNY suzrgery?

I have heard about gall stones and someone suggested that it made sense to have the gall bladder removed to prevent stones. I have never had gall bladder problems. Suggestions?    — gettinhealthy (posted on March 28, 2010)

I attended multiple bariatric seminars prior to choosing my surgeon. At one seminar, the surgeon said he removes the gall bladder at the time of surgery...just in case stones later develop. The gall bladder question was asked at at least one seminar. All the other surgeons said, "Why in the world would we want to remove a perfectly good organ?" My surgeon did not remove my gall bladder, but he has me on a gall bladder medication for one year in order to prevent problems. This is something you have to discuss with your surgeon.

I didn't have mine removed and haven't had any problems with it. Before my surgery I had an ultrasound done on my gallbladder so the surgeon could decide what to do, and it was fine. Same as the other answer - Why remove something if it is working fine. Your surgeon should have some diagnostic tests done before surgery so the correct decision can be made for you.

I had my RNY surgery March 9th 2010..and then had to go back in with major stomach pain March 19th. Turns out I had 3 gallstones, and had to have another surgery to have my gallbladder removed..Just have your surgeon check it out first... --Missy

I signed a consent giving my Dr permission to remove only if needed.Afterwards I was told he did not have to remove it that it looked fine.I guess everyone is different.

Mine was removed during surgery. I had no problems with it before, but the surgeon thought it looked inflamed. I found out in the recovery room.....no biggie. It makes me happy it was taken out now. I'd rather not have to have another abdominal surgery down the road because of it.....Kind of a "2-for-1" deal this way.

Yes if the surgeron will do it the same time it would be great. But most have stopped. Because of insurance reinburments.

I had open RNY May 2009. Because my gall bladder did not look bad the Dr could not get it removed because of the insurance company. On April 6th, next week I will be having my gallbladder removed. So it is not only up to the Dr it is also up to the insurance company and what they will pay for. We all know how picky the insurance companies can be. Good luck with your surgery and have a great day

I will be having surgery on 4/20 and my gallbladder will be removed. I have some small gall stones and was told the chances of them getting worse is greater with the surgery and then I would have to go back for another major surgery. The stones were found via ultrasound as a routine by my surgeon be RNY.

During my research years ago...I learned that alot of people eventually have gallbladder problems...My Nutritionist said "If your surgeon takes your gallbladder with your RNY surgery, you'll be glad he did"....He didn't, and I have not had trouble with it yet (6 years) But her comment always stuck with me...It's always in the back of my mind when things don't feel right!

I had surgery on 2/19/10. My doctor gave me a choice to have my gallbladder removed. He said most people do have problems later. Since I don't want another surgery possibly in the future and pay the extra cost then, I had it removed. It usually is up to you to make the choice.
