Question:
Cant tolerate meat?????
I am 6 months post op, i used to be able to eat pork chops or a hamburger pattie, on saturday, i threw up for an hour on half a pattie, on sunday, i had the foamies for 4 hours from 1/3 of a pork chop. Im not sure what is going on but any info would be helpful. I am not eating to fast and i am chewing well. What could it be. My surgeon is another province but if things dont improve i will have to fly out to see him. Thanks for reading and responding if you can. — sassy1696 (posted on September 15, 2009)

I am 17 mo post RNY and I can't eat meat very well. When I get the foamies
I know its because I take to big of a bite..I usually take about 20 minutes
to eat just a little bit of meat..I really don't like eating any protein at
all but I know I have to...My surgeon told me to eat a piece of meat the
"size of an eraser at the end of a pencil". It helped. I hope I
helped a little. Good luck and try not to get discouraged.

You problem is that the bit you are taking is too big for the opening to
the pouch. The opening is only the width of your littl pinkie. The
foamies are because you aren't chewing your food to mush. It really has to
be mush if you are trying to eat meat. A lot of post op's don't eat meat
for at least 1.5 yrs out because it is so hard to eat. It takes forever to
chew and you risk the chance of it getting stuck, then you have to throw up
for hours only to try again. Put it in a blender with some broth. It is
the taste and it won't get stuck. Not blended to liquid but get the big
chunks out. Hope this helps.

I had my RNY surgery in Mar. of this year, next week will be the 6 month
point. I still have troulbe with meat and tend to avoid it at all costs. It
doesn't matter whether it's beef, pork, chicken I stay away unless it's in
a chilli or a soup. Last night I did eat about 4 ozs of filet mignon and it
was pretty good. I didn't have any real problems with it but I did chew
lots. I think we all have to get over this hump of getting used to eating
certain foods that we know can/will give us problems. When I encounter a
food that gives me a problem I leave it alone for a 3-4 weeks and then try
again.
The key for me is not having the meat to dry. I can NEVER eat meat that has
been reheated in a microwave.

I am a year post RNY & I can't tolerate meat at all, in any form. I
cannot even get it to the chew stage (I guess psychological!) I have
pretty much resigned myself to it.

I had a very hard time with red meat after surgery, but do well now (15
months out) Try eating a lil bread with your bite..it seems to help, but I
do know that I can't eat alot of pork..I do ok with steak and meatballs
,pulled porkand ham. Maybe its the dryness of the meat...not sure..but I
know I kept at it until I did better..gotta chew chew chew of course. Best
of luck to you! hugs,kim

Don't eat it. Your still healing. Eat meat that is less chewy. Lunchmeats
that are thin sliced. Chicken, Fish. Stay away from Pork, steak and
hamburger for now. Let your body heal for at least a year. Don't do protein
shakes. Get your protein from food. I am 5 1/2 years post op I only eat 3-4
small bites of meat even now. Here is a link for high protein foods.

I'm 19 months post op and what I do is with the FIRST bite of any meat is
to chew 4 papaya enzyme tablets. That is what meat tenderizer is made out
of---papaya enzymes and it will help to break down the meat. The reason you
take them after the first bite of meat is that you don't want them sitting
in your empty pouch, you need to give them sonething to work on or else
they will cause possible irratation to the pouch. If I haven't taken these
with my meal and something gets stuck and I've got the foamies I try and
chew a few of these also to help breakdown the clog.
These are available anywhere and are very inexpensive.
GOOD LUCK!

Hello,
I am 23 months post op and I have had great difficulty with any meat. Like
stated before, you have to cut it so small and really take your time to
chew it to a mushy consistency. I have just started to tolerate adding a
little meat to my diet.
Best of luck to you. It can be upsetting, but eventually you will find ways
to get those foods in.

I don't do solid meat often too likely to have a problem.
Sometime we just can't eat it any more. But if this is new for you and it
sounds like it is you may be developing a stoma. They can stretch it out and
you should be good as new again.

Sorry A stricture not a stoma. It is a tightening of the stoma due to scar
tissue.

I am 4 years out and still have a hard time with beef and pork (not bacon)
so I tend to avoid it. I have used the blender and mixed it with gravey to
get my protein that way. good luck I can also only eat to date about 5oz
before im full and have to stop eating.
