Question:
Does the dumping caused by eating sugar eventually stop?
I don't want it to stop.... I was/am a sugar addict and I need that "tool" to help me not eat sugar... Some people say at first after surgery if you eat sugar you'll get sick, nauseated "dump" but that after a year or so, you can eat sugar without getting sick. I do NOT want to be able to eat sugar in any quantity other than one bite.... Can you all please let me know what your experience has been? Thanks! — Gina S. (posted on March 26, 2009)

Hi Gina,
I had RNY 7/1/08 and if I forget when I am making a BBQ sauce and like my
fingers that is a enough to give me a awful headache and cause me to dump.
I know others that are fine with that much sugar...but I am not. I also can
not tolerate any fatty/greasy food or I dump. Believe me it has only been
by pure accident I would never wish that feeling on myself. (or to many
people I know) To me it is not worth trying sugar to see how much is ok.
There are to many great sugar-free foods out there to enjoy. Why experiment
with dumping. Best of luck to you!!

Some people are able to eat sugar and others are not. I am one of the
people who get sick when I eat sugar. I have gone through so much to get
where I am, that I will happily give up sugar if it keeps the weight off.
Good luck in making the best decision for you. Susaan

I hate to burst your bubble, but after a certain amount of years you can
eat just about anything. I am 6+ years out and I can handle sugar very
well (too well actually). Ice cream is the only thing I have to really be
careful of and anything too fatty, but I no longer dump in any way, shape
or form. SOOOO, I make a concerted effort daily to maintain my weight loss
and I really work at it, believe me. Take full advantage of the time when
you do dump to traih yourself to stay away from those things because once
you can handle it all, it will be a real struggle. Good luck to you. (from
268 to currently 114). Missy

I still dump as well...Newly PO, it was very sensitive...After some years I
could tolerate more sugar and carbs...But something I did learn about
myself is that the more sugar I eat regularly, the more I can increase it.
The less I eat...The more sensitive I then become again...SO I decided that
I would NOT push sugar and try to eat more of it when all it does is make
me gain weight! All my weight gains were from sugar! Always! So I eat SF
things and limit sugar/white flour GREATLY...I still eat nature's carbs all
of them even the starchy ones...But I limit those as well to once a week at
most! To be quite honest I avoid sugar mainly because I KNOW it's not good
for me...Dumping does remind me...but I can eat quite a bit and just decide
NOT to! After surgery it is the one thing we SHOULD all try to give up
regardless of dumping or not! It's the fastest route to gaining weight back
in my humble opinion!

Gina, Everybody is different. I, for one, unfortunally, can eat as much
sugar as I want with no problem. I can not eat fat though, without
dumping. A lot of time I can't even have a regular meal of veges and meat,
ie; chicken, pork, or steak, without dumping. Isn't it stupid that I can
eat cake and cookies, sugary candies, doughnuts, etc. with no problem, but
can't eat a regular meal. Before my surgery one of my biggest problem was
ice cream and milkshakes, and since surgery I can not because I have become
lactose intolerant. Thank God for small favors. I am 13 mos. post RNY and
have lost only about 85 lbs. Probably beause I still have a hard time
staying away from sweets. Paula B.
