Question:
Protein Supplement
I am scheduled for surgery next month. I was given a lot of material to read re my diet after the I leave the hospital & I DO plan on seeing a nutritonist. However, the food plan they gave me states I need to have 4 ozs. of protein supplement (aka - Prosource) as a snack. It tastes awful. You guys that have had the gastric bypass, how did you manage your protein intate? Did you drink this awful, gluy, sticky liquid? Please help. Ruthie.... — Ruth M. (posted on January 25, 2009)

I would as them abou that, my nut and Dr just stated that I needed atleast
60g of protien. There is no set brand that you need to use. You try a
little of many different brands and flavors until you find on that you
like. I use the bullett since it is 42g in 3 oz. I take a
"Shot" which is 1/2 the bullett and then wait a couple of hours
and take the other. Even if you don't really like the taste you can treat
it like cough syrup or any other liquid meds.... it is only 1.5 oz and 21g
protein per shot.

I really like the EAS chocolate. It is VERY fine and dissolves completely
in 8 oz of skim milk. It has 23g protein add that to the 8g of milk that
is a total of 31g of protein in one drink. I have tried A LOT of different
protein shakes and this one is by far the best. I purchase it at Sams
and is about $30.00 for a large bag. Good luck Kimberly

Ruth,
I've been drinking protein shakes for a long time now and can tell you
that there are loads of brands out there that are tolerable and they come
in a whole host of flavors. You need to be careful and read labels though
as some have "0" carbs and some have a minimal amount of carbs,
and most have a minimal amount of sugar, etc. The powdered mixes are better
I think than they gluey liquids as they go down easier and if you hold your
breath while you swallow, they don't taste as bad. :-)

So what you guys are saying is that instead of having this "collagen
& whey protein supplement" which taste awful, I can have a protein
shake in it's place? I have no problem drinking a protein shake. I DO
have a problem with this envelope they gave me called "ProSource"
& it's a guey, sticky fluid that they feed people on feeding tubes.

Protidiet tastes great, especially the grape and tropical. I don't care for
the orange or peach. Go to DietDirect.com to order online. I use it every
day.

I also order protidiet from diet direct. Also there is a pure protein
drink you can get from Walmart, Miejer (if you live in the Great lakes
States. I usually put a bullet into 32 oz water because i couldn't do the
thick shots.

I to am scheduled for wls next month and I have been trying lots of
different protein drinks. I have found that the nectar whey protein isolate
(carribean cooler) is more palatable. I have also tried this protein drink
I found at 7-11 called Naked. It takes getting used to but I can tolerate
it somewhat. Also I'm waiting for some samples I ordered from UNJURY.COM I
heard great things about them and they also have a chicken soup flavored
one I heard was good.

I too used the protidiet. I really like the kiwi melon, peach mango, grape,
there are quite a few too choose from, and I mixed mine with a 16 oz water
bottle, so it was so convenient for on the go.
And when you can have yogurt, I mixed 1 cup of vanilla yogurt, 1/2 banana,
the pouch of peach mango protein and about 5 ice cubes, very tasty. Good
Luck.

I am pre-WLS but have been drinking protein shakes for years. A couple of
suggestions: If using the powder, it can be a challenge to get it all
blended in and the lumps really bother me. I've found if I shake it up the
day before and put it into the refrigerator, then when I'm ready for it,
shake it again and the lumps will go away. Also, blending it with a hand
blender, or in one of the plastic containers that use to come with Hidden
Valley Ranch dressing or from Tupperware that is shaped like a cup with a
snap on lid and pour spout, then inside is a "blending wheel"
that helps a lot!
One other way I've found to make most more palatable is to pop in a few ice
cubes and blend it in the blender. Lightens it up a bit and gets it really
cold.

Hi Ruthie. I had a very hard time just after surgery with the protein
shakes. The artificial sweeteners really gagged me, but I found Unjury
protein powders, and my life changed for the better!! I buy the unflavored
powder, and in the beginning I mixed it with milk, later..I mixed it with
nestles flavored water. Unjury saved me. I like two ..the unflavored and
the chicken soup, which I mixed with broth. Now I have no problem getting
the protein in. I order it on line and it comes right to my door. I have it
automatically ordered every month so I don't even have to think about it.
The cost varies depending on how many containers you buy of it. Remember
your body can only absorb so much at a time...no more than 30g, so anything
more is wasted. Hope you find this info helpful and best of luck with your
upcoming surgery! hugs, Kim

Ruthie,
I also had major problems with protein drinks. I also use the protidiet
drinks. I get mine from www.bariatricchoice.com . I like the grape,
tropical fruit and the orange. If you write to them and ask them for
samples, they may send you some. Toni

I drank Boost those first two weeks. The chocolate was the best of them
but... halfway through that second week I start swiping my sister's protein
drink because I got so tired of the flavor.

Isopure is on of my favorites since it's a clear protein which is like a
fruit drink there are lots of other flavors. New Whey is the
"shot" that others have spoken about. You can find these at GNC
or The Vitamin Shoppe. You could also order them online if you choose.
Good Luck

Unfortunately, it's a hit or miss with the protien intake because
everyone's taste buds are different. However, I did find a tasteless
protien powder by Isopure (I found it on ebay) and it takes on the taste of
whatever you mix it in. So I like to mix it in juice or something that I
like to drink, it's easier for ME that way. But like I said everyone is
different. Hope this helps.
