Question:
How many carbs should I consume in a day?
I am post lap RNY (6/25/08) and I am wondering if I am taking in to many carbs. In a day I probably consume about 60-80 grams of carbs. Is that too much? And is popcorn a bad treat or a good snack? — Kbrisbon (posted on January 9, 2009)

I have heard that we shouldn't have more than 20 grams of carbs a day. But
you should check with your nut to be sure since all programs are
different.
My surgeon said no more popcorn but I'll admit that I've had a 100 calorie
bag of it recently. The main reason they want us to stay away is because
there is not really any good nutritional value to popcorn and it can lead
to other snacking.

I think 60 carbs is too much. I agree with the previous writer. I asked
my nutritionist and she said I could have the popcorn as long as it's the
low fat kind. I eat one SNACK size, 94% fat free bag every evening. It
hasn't let to any other snacking for me. I personally think the fiber is
good for me especially since I don't eat any bread etc. My nutritionist
gives me 1000 calories a day and I do not stray from that. I always make
sure I get my other stuff in each day before I have popcorn for a snack.
My surgery was on Aug. 23, 2008. Hope this helps you.

Popcorn can be a little tough to digest and is considered to be carbs. Not
the best choice of snack. My surgeon says no more than 30 carbs/day. What
does your surgeon and/or nutritionist say?

I think it is best to ask your doctor. What has your Nut told you ? I would
stay under 30 grams per day. As for the popcorn try to get the 100 cal bag.
Make sure there is no butter or salt on it. It is really hard to go to the
movie's and not buy popcorn. The first 15 mins are very hard for me. But
once I get into the movie I forgot about having popcorn. For me once I
start eating popcorn I can't stop. I have beeb renting alot of movies. Good
Luck.

At this eary stage of your weight loss, you might consider cutting down the
carbs at bit if you are not losing at a decent pace...If you are losing
just fine...DON'T worry about it...Just make good choices! ...I wouldn't
count vegetables at all but any really high carby things that do not offer
a little protein, fiber and vitamins as well...Simple carbs store as
fat...It the reason for all the carb phobias...They can hinder progress if
it's too much...but as your calorie intake increases it's only natural that
your carbs will increase as well. When I am eating lean...I eat a large
variety of beans...They are high carbs, but also high protein AND high
fiber, low fat....So I do not fret about the carbs from beans because, to
me, they are a near perfect choice for all that they offer in
nutrition...Carbs do not make you gain weight...Calories do. So if carbs
are the majority of your diet...and you are gaining...yeah...cut them!
Popcorn is okay... it is low cal and low fat (if you don't drench it in
butter)It's a little high in carbs if you are watching them closely.... But
it does have good fiber numbers! And even a little protein...Personally, I
don't eat it anymore at all...It gets stuck easy...Does not agree with my
pouch at all! Lots of Grads eat it as a snack...I find it hard to pass up
if it's in my house...but I only eat a handful if that! You decide!

You should avoid carbs like the plague, unless they come from veggies and
fruit for the most part. Talk to your nutritionist and your surgeon. They
should be able to give you a proper plan to follow. Good luck.

I too, was also counseled to only consume 25gr of carbs per day as well. It
has helped me keep 110lbs off for over 3 years now (RNY).

I was told no more than 25 grams of carbs per day, most of them to come
from vegetables and fruits.

We just had this discussion at our support meeting last week. Our nut said
that your body needs about 100g carbs. It seems that it is different with
who ever you ask.

The nutritionists who claim that the body needs 100 grams of carbohydrate a
day are simply wrong because morbidly obese people who are trying to lose
weight have different carbohydrate needs than healthy individuals with no
weight to lose. First, consuming more than 40 grams of carbs a day will
for most of us who struggle with overeating lead to more intense cravings
as that much carbohydrate intake will contribute to blood sugar
fluctations. Secondly, high carbohyrdate intake will slow down weight loss
as it will limit the body's ability to kick into ketosis.
