Question:
does having a lap band usually get rid of type 1 diabeties

Research is showing that wls can reverse or at least make better Type 2 diabetes. There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes. Type 2 is based on insulin resistance, and is often related to obesity. Type 1 is an autoimmune attack to the beta cells in the pancreas, and cannot be reversed. I know this because my little 5 year old has Type 1 and was diagnosed at 20 months old. He has been on insulin ever since, first injections, now an insulin pump. The insulin making cells in his pancreas were destroyed by the autoimmune attack. I, on the other hand, have Type 2 diabetes, and am hoping gastric bypass and losing a great deal of weight will reverse it. Hope this helps. : )

There is no "cure" for diabetes. It can help control and even put into remission diabetes. My last A1C was 5.7 which is normal :-) Donna, Indiana

I had a RNY and I am off of all medication, but the damage done can not be undone. My A1C is now 5.6.

Type 2 diabetes has an 85% cure rate with RNY and about 45% with the band. I have seen no research that shows any "cure" for type 1 diabetes. That said, you become healthier as you lose weight which can only have a positive impact on your type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes happens because the pancreas is unable to produce/release insulin. Type 2 diabetes happens when the body is unable to efficiently use the insulin produced by the pancreas. Weight loss surgery has nothing to do with your pancreas so it will not get rid of type 1 diabetes. It will make you healthier overall tho... It will also help your body use the insulin you take more efficiently and keep blood sugar stable.
