Question:
I am going into my 3rd week post surgery
and I am going to start the soft food stage, any suggestions as to how much you can usually hold in the pouch. 1/2 cup 1/4 cup? — jlh1129 (posted on December 29, 2007)

I would go with a fourth cup. If you tolorate that well, move up to a
third. but don't rush it. I was told we should never have more than a cup
of food at the latest phase, but that is way out. (This is what my nut.
says anyway)

Most surgeons recommend starting out with 2 ounce servings. I know that
doesn't sound like much. Use a salad plate, and smaller baby spoons or
forks. Makes the food look like more. Most people would take 2 ounces on
their fork before surgery. These smaller portions are designed for behavior
modification, until you learn more about how food will affect you. Not
everybody can tolerated the same foods.

I agree with the previous post. You will also find you can tolerate more
of some foods, less of others. For example, I'm 7 weeks out. I can eat 4
oz of shrimp or fish, but only 2 oz of chicken. It just doesn't agree with
me right now. Eat very slowly, take bites the size of a pencil eraser,
chew at least 15 times, put the fork down between bites and stop when you
are full.

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post. Depending on the food I eat 1/4 to 1/3 cup (2-3 oz).
I ate 1/2 cup of cream soup and got sick. Ate too much. It's important to
eat slow and stop when you get full. Even though you won't know when your
full everytime. If you don't puree your food make sure you chew it until
it's almost a liquid.

I am three months post RNY. When I started soft food and even now I do
three ounces for my meals. Protein first, then low car vegetables if I if
have room. I still don't know when I am full but I strop there but I stop.
Every doctor has different food plans but I stick right with the plans
guidelines, 60-80 grams of protein a day, 600-800 calories. As of today I
have lost 50 lbs. It's really import to use this surgery as a tool and not
see how much you can get away with eating. Good luch with your new
journey.

Your doc should give you a list of foods with measurments. My doc says with
cottage cheese or apple sauce, I can have 1/4 c to start, but with soups, I
can have 1 cup. I have not tried the cottage cheese becasue I do not like
it, but with the soup, I feel overly full with a whole cup. I would start
with no more than 1/2 c and if you can take a little more, add it, but dont
stuff yourself.

At almost 4 weeks post op lap RNY, I am able to do 1/3 C of pureed food. I
eat tuna salad, that I puree in the cuisinart, mashed potatoes, soups,
oatmeal, applesauce (unsweetened), srambled eggs (only 1). It's hard not
getting enough veggies in...I know my carbs will change when I can finally
eat salad. But 1/3 C for me goes down fine...no problems with indigestion
or vomiting to date. I also feel full after that amount. Sometimes
before, so I stop when I feel full.
