Question:
Did anyone else have a sleep study and not be able to sleep?

I couldn't sleep, my back was killing me and at about 2 am the tech asked if I wanted to terminate the test...she kind of reccomended it. It was miserable , I spent the last hour w/ tears running down my face. Is this test mandatory for surgery..I don't see my dr. until tomorrow    — jodyh (posted on September 18, 2006)

Many surgeons do require a sleep test. I slept better during the study than I do at home ... I also took a prescribed sleeping pill (which I do at home too). See if you can take Lunesta or Ambien for your next study.

Yes, it is mandatory. I was able to do mine at home with a Snap machine. You might ask your Doc if he knows where you can get one. Then I sent my tape in to be studied with very quick results. Let me know if you need more info. Deborah

Hi Jody, sorry this turned out to be such a disaster for you. I had my study done last month. The tech was great. I could not go to sleep. I was trying to turn over on my side, knocked the lamp off the night stand! Tech came running in to see what I was tearing up in there lol. Then I got a case of heart burn from hell. Tech came back in to check on me again, then I had to pee. I finally got as comfortable as I was going to get, the tech came back in, said wake up! you're done. I said did I go to sleep? He said yeah, but now for long. Got my study back and have mild/moderate sleep apnea. Hopefully they will retest you and give you something to help your back and to sleep. Best of luck. Teresa

I had the same thing happen. They terminated the test. It was the night from hell. It didn't stop them from performing the RNY surgery so I wouldn't fret too much over it. I have heard the same thing from many many others.

I had the sleep study done and I think I slept a total of 2 hours. lol I couldn't sleep in the bed because my back was killing me too so the tech let me sleep in the recliner. I didn't have enough sleep apnea to require a CPAP machine but I have to have oxygen at night.

The ambien is a great suggestion. Wish I had thought of that. I've had several sleep studies. For me, the type of mask used made a huge difference. What worked best personally is called nasal pillows. These are little rubber accordian-like things that go over your nostrils instead of covering your nose and mouth like most masks. I found it much more comfortable.

I feel for you... I had a horrible time trying to sleep during my study. I wrote about the experience in my profile... so I hope it helps to know that you are not the only one! I was actually surprised to find out I had moderate to severe sleep apnea and now have to figure out how to sleep with the CPAP (a whole other story). I'm not sure if it's mandatory for surgery, I would think that's up to your Dr... but if you are able to do it again, I would recommend it, because it's safer to know than not to know... Good luck! Get up really early that morning and make sure you are busy all day, so that you will be tired. Also, take some tylenol for the pback pain.
